Bonnaroo 2011 [Day 1]

By Will, June 16th 2011 — with 1 comment

I’m putting this right out there: Bonnaroo is something that every single music fan should at least experience once. If you can afford to make a long drive/journey to the hot fields of Manchester, Tennesee, then you will have the time of your life. I went partly as a writer/blogger but more so as a music fan. I went with a good group of friends, which made all of the difference in my enjoyment of the incredible four days that I spent there.

We got there early Thursday morning and got our camp all set up. I caught the end of Best Coast, who sounding a lot stronger than I remember them being last year. The crowd was pretty large for them, a telling sign of their rising popularity.

Up next was The Drums who have shifted their lineup somewhat. Guitarist Jacob Graham was moved to the back handling the keyboards/electronics, which was disappointing to me, because his dramatic body language was one of the highlights of their live show for me. Aside from singer Jonathan Pierce, who is always fun to watch, the band didn’t have the same stage presence that I remembered. The songs were still delivered with crisp sharpness, nothing was lost musically. The band played some new songs, one of which is called “Money”. The songs were beefed up featuring some heavy duty basslines. The band are supposed to have new material coming out soon, and now I’m even more excited to hear how it turns out.

One of the big conflicts of the night was The Walkmen and Sleigh Bells. I have yet to see Sleigh Bells but I can never pass up a chance to see The Walkmen, so I followed my gut and came out even happier than I expected. The Walkmen came out and delivered one of the tightest sets I’ve seen all year. The band was in top form, knocking out all of their old classics, along with their finest new material. The band sounded super sharp, leaving me in awe on more than one occasion. Hamilton’s voice was beyond breathtaking, especially during the final two song stretch of “The Rat” & “All Hands & The Cook” – which may have been the most memorable stretch of songs for me at Bonnaroo. I finally can say that I saw the “The Rat”, and it’s just as powerful as you’d expect it to be. What I didn’t expect was to be completely knocked off my ass from “All Hands & The Cook” which kept me in a state of awe for the entire night. Hamilton’s voice was pristine giving me goosebumps on more than one occasion, delivering vocal goods that even I didn’t know he had in him. The band released a plethora of energy that couldn’t be contained, and I’m not sure if many bands matched it the rest of the weekend.

Deerhunter cleaned house for day one of Bonnaroo and boy did they bring it all. Reverb, effects, delays, and mind tricks were in full effect here, causing everyone in the crowd – sober or not – feeling like they were on something. Bradford Cox has grown into a very engaging frontman, seeming to be more confident on stage. The band ran through all of their catalogue, leaving me impressed with how far they’ve come over their years. If you don’t like Deerhunter that much, I would still recommend seeing them live. You really can’t go wrong.

The Walkmen played a new song that they’ve been working on, which you can watch below:

Kaiser Chiefs have revealed that there isn’t one true form of their new album The Future Is Medieval. It’s up to their fans to decide what songs make up the album. Confused? Here, I’ll explain:

Head to Kaiser Chiefs website. There are 20 songs to choose from, and you get to listen to one minute clips of each. You will then pick ten and put them together to form an album. You pay £7.50 and get to download your version of the album. It gets even more interesting. You then can post the album you created for sale and you get £1 for each sale you make.

I myself am a big fan of the album and don’t like how there is no “definite” version of the album. I don’t know how I feel about having hundreds of personal versions of an album out there. A carefully selected tracklisting makes all of the difference. I’m sure many people really like this idea and I can see way. I applaud the creativity of Kaiser Chiefs. I just worry that The Future Is Medieval will be known as the first create your own album, rather than a definite collection of songs. But hey, that’s just me.

It’s an interesting experiment, and it will be even more interesting to see what comes out of all this. So check out the whole process and see what you make out of it. Literally.

No Surrender – Silver Hall (Feat. Tunde Adebimpe)

By Will, June 3rd 2011 — with 1 comment

No Surrender is a Brooklyn collective that features Eddie Steeples who you may know as Crabman from My Name Is Earl. It’s not easy to pinpoint their sound, which features elements of hip hop, electronic, and indie rock. It makes sense that Tunde Adebimpe helps them out on vocals from time to time, as TV On The Radio is definitely an easy comparison.

Check out “Silver Hall” a track that featured the TVOTR singer from their latest album, Medicine Babies (June 21st via ZerOKilled). It’s dripping wet with all kinds of cool.

The Kooks are back with the announcement of their 3rd studio album, which will be titled Junk Of The Heart. In a press release, frontman Luke Pritchard said:

It’s upbeat; an album to play in the sun. What we really wanted to do was build a proper, full album. Something you can listen to from front to back. We’re an album band and this is a journey you come on with us.

Call them a guilty pleasure of mine, sure. Their first album was a fun, energetic dash of catch British pop-rock. Their 2nd album had some delightful moments as well. Junk Of The Heart was recorded with producer Tony Hoffer at The Sound Factory in LA and Sarm Studios in London. Hoffer produced both of The Kooks previous albums.

The album will drop on September 13th via Astralwerks Records. A single sharing the same title will come out on June 11th. The band is stopping by Bowery Ballroom on June 27th to preview some new material. Tickets go on sale in 20 minutes right here.

Check out the tracklisting & hear a new song from the album, all after the jump:

[new] Coldplay – Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall

By Will, June 3rd 2011 — with 9 comments

Today Coldplay have released a new single titled “Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall”. Their first new material in quite some time. After the surprise that was Viva La Vida, fans have been (im)patiently awaiting to hear new material. I’m one of those fans. However, I’m left very disappointed upon initial listens.

It’s not that this song is terrible, it’s just nothing that we haven’t heard from the guys yet. My gripe with the new single is that it isn’t the direction that they needed to take. The band took a step in the right direction on Viva La Vida, where they experimented enough where their sound worked in a whole new light.

With this single I hate to think that the band decided to play it safe, but that’s what these first few spins of “Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall” is telling me. I’m sure it will do well on the charts, it’s probably going to be a good song to see live at festivals this summer. But for a guy who really wanted to see Coldplay progress into the band that they could be, I’m somewhat disappointed. And remember, this is coming from a fan of the band who deeply adored Viva La Vida. This song just isn’t doing anything for me right now. I feel like I’ve heard it before.

Be your own judge. Take a listen below:

There’s no official word if this is on their new album (though I’m assuming it is). Hopefully the rest of the album fares better and this is just the most single ready song. I’m still excited to hear what else the band can do.
