Filligar are old favorites around these parts, so I’m smiling really hard writing that Filligar are headlining my favorite venue, Bowery Ballroom. The show will take place on August 4th, and tickets are only $13.

The band is always in town whenever I’m up at school, so I’m very excited to finally catch the guys live. Don’t miss out. Grab your tickets here and go here for more info.

If you need convincing, here’s “Guilty Good Intentions”, a wonderful cut from their last album, The Nerve:

[new] Real Estate – It’s Real

By Will, July 12th 2011 — with 1 comment

Real Estate have released a jangly new song titled “It’s Real” that is taken from their new album, Days (out October 18 via Domino). The lovely vocal’s and jangly guitars add up to create a memorable track that Real Estate have practically made their signature.

The band originally hails from Ridgewood, New Jersey, which is pretty close to me in Orangeburg, New York. As close to hometown as it gets for me. Close enough.

The band is playing a free show on July 23 at Prospect Park Bandshell along with The Feelies, and Times New Viking. Check out the rest of their tour dates and the tracklisting for Days after the jump:

The Vaccines didn’t think just showing up at T In The Park was enough. They brought out Franz Ferdinand’s faithful drumer Paul Thomson who added an extra pair of sticks for The Vaccines cover of The Standell’s “Good Guys Don’t Wear White” and The Vaccines current single, “Nørgaard”.

Watch both peformances below:

Panda Bear played “You Can Count On Me” on Jimmy Fallon tonight, marking his late night TV debut. A few of my friends even managed to win admission to the screening. Noah’s vocals as the beginning are out of this world.

Noah is in town because Animal Collective are playing a sold out show in Brooklyn at Prospect Park tomorrow night. I’ll be covering the show, so try not to stand behind me.

[video] The Tins – Spies (Live at Brighton Music Hall)

By Will, July 12th 2011 — with 1 comment

The Tins will soon be making their return to the musical world, and I couldn’t be happier. I’ve had the pleasure of hearing some demos of new songs – and they’re sounding incredible. One of the new songs is the very memorable “Spies” which I haven’t been able to shake since my first listen.

The Buffalo, New York natives should be ones on your radar after “The Green Room”. If you don’t know who they are, then get to know them. Here’s a fantastic live performance of the new song that the band played at Boston’s Brighton Music Hall while opening for The Blow:

You’re gonna want to hit replay.

Letting Up Despite Great Faults have created the perfect summer jam with “Teenage Tide”. It has that youthful glow of The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart. What I mean is it sounds young and free, feeding off all the best moments that the summer has to offer. You know, taking advantage of that perfect moment, and making the most out of it. It’s amazing how effortless the band is able to sound while packing in all these feel good sounds.

“Teenage Tide” is taken from their Paper Crush EP which will be released on August 2nd via Old Flame Records.

[listen] Black Milk – Brain // Royal Mega (Feat. Jack White)

By Will, July 12th 2011 — with 2 comments

Imagine if Jack White put together a jazz fusion of The Dead Weather/Black Keys along with the smooth touch of Detroit MC Black Milk. Well that’s exactly what you get on “Brain” and “Royal Mega”, two new songs from Black Milk that Jack White co-produced.  Jack played guitar on “Brain” and drums on “Royal Mega”.

Both songs are funky fresh and sure to please fans across the board. It drops tomorrow on a 7″ record via Jack’s Third Man Records. Take a listen to both songs below thanks to SKOA:

The always smiling Hold Steady frontman Craig Finn has created a tumblr and twitter page and used the former to announce that he’s working on a solo album. He’s staying in Austin, Texas at a friends guest house working on the songs. He’s keeping us updated on the whole process on the tumblr, which every Hold Steady fan needs to be following right now.

He also mentioned that The Hold Steady will begin writing LP #6 in September, so we can probably expect a new record from them by 2012.

After the jump check out a song called “One Single Saviour” that Craig performed solo in April. Maybe it will be on the new album.

Cymbals Eat Guitars have released an epic 8 and a half minute long song titled “Rifle Eyesight” as a free download. It’s the opening track to their new album, Lenses Alien, which drops on August 30th via Barsuk Records.

“Rifle Eyesight” is a dense track that sounds like three tracks packed tightly in one. It’s the type of song that requires intense headphone listening. Your mind will thank you as it’s deliriously melting away by the halfway point. If the first half is hazy psych perfection, then the second half hints at 90s indie pop before drifting off down a dark corner.

This is how you open an album.
