[new] Noel Gallagher- The Death Of You And Me

By Will, July 25th 2011 — with 3 comments

Noel Gallagher is officially doing his own thing. Today Noel Gallagher released a music video for his debut single, “The Death Of You And Me”.

We’ve all wondered what Noel could do on his own, and this song is actually miles better than I hoped, and I expected something great from him. He’s free to tread towards unfamiliar territories, while also leaving traces of his signature sound.

I’m a big fan of this song, and I think any fans of Oasis will agree with me. This is good stuff.

Watch the video below:

Here’s a stream of the single as well:

“The Death Of You And Me ” is taken from his debut album, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, which will be released on October 17. It’s available for pre-order here.

Introducing: Peppercorn

By Will, July 25th 2011

Peppercorn are a band from Sydney, Australia who admit that a lot of people think they sound similar to Cut Copy.

There are certainly flashes of dance elements that Cut Copy own so well on Peppercorn’s debut EP, Wasted Summer, but these guys certainly cast their own shadow. They create feel good music with a dance edge that certainly sounds like it’s made for a good summer night – not quite a waste. “Need You Now” & “I’ll Get Back To You” are two dance ready cuts that appealed to me right away. “Dreaming” reminded me a bit of Weezer, maybe Green Album era.

The whole EP is available for free download right here. Check out “I’ll Get Back To You” below:

Youth Lagoon – Montana

By Will, July 25th 2011 — with 1 comment

Trevor Powers is the 22 year old genius behind Youth Lagoon. Fat Possum will release his debut album, The Year Of Hibernation, on September 27.

He first came to attention with a free badcamp release and now he’s taking breaths away with his inspirational song, “Montana”. It’s just incredible. Words can’t really describe the magical waters that it touches. You just got to listen:

Keep an eye out for Youth Lagoon. “Montana” is certainly a highlight of the year. Who knows what other gems this kid will deliver on The Year Of Hibernation.

Hypocrite in a Hippy Crypt is an 19 year old student at Indiana University originally from Carmel, Indiana. He’s released his debut LP, Tweaker In The Park, via Kurt Vile’s record label, Gulcher Records. If you’re a fan of honest lo-fi 90s influenced songs, then Tweaker In The Park is your guy. There’s not much standing in the way of him and his tunes, and that’s what makes it all so special.

When describing his songs he says, “Some are very personal, some are whimsical stories.” See what he means on the albums opening track, “The Town Crazies”, which is available to download below:

Possimiste – Behind The Seas

By Will, July 24th 2011

Possimiste is a 18-year-old singer/songwriter who has kept her identity a secret. She let’s her music do all the speaking for her.

Her new single “Behind The Seas” is a good indication of the fragility in her music. It’s a song that’s free from boundaries an escape from the restrictions of life to something more free.

Some parts remind me of Sigur Ros…if they had a female singer. I’m sure she gets that a lot.

[new]: M.I.A. – 27

By Will, July 24th 2011 — with 1 comment

Last night M.I.A. tweeted about a song called “27″ that she posted on soundcloud. It’s an unfinished demo that she recorded “b4 vickileekx and never put it out”. She dedicated the song to Amy Winehouse, who passed away yesterday.

She went on to write “R.I.P. Amy”. Listen to the song below:

Yesterday was brutal hot, over 100 degrees in many places. It didn’t stop me and some music hungry Brooklynites from heading to the Williamsburg Waterfront to rock out with Death From Above 1979.

The Drums were announced as a surprise opener only a week ago or so to my delight. Their music has practically been the soundtrack to this summer for my friends and I. They played a lot of new material such as the catchy new single, “Money”. Some new stuff really seems to be playing true to a 80s new wave sound. They played most of their debut album, notably leaving out “Let’s Go Surfing” and “Down By The Water”. I think part of this attributes to the new direction that the band hinted at on some of the new songs. I had a great time swaying to their set. Not sure how the rest of the crowd enjoyed it since it’s sort of an odd pairing considering the music that comes out of Death From Above.

Immediately as Jesse Keeler & Sebastien Grainger took the stage they teased us with the beginnings of “Turn It Out”. You’d be lying if you said that you couldn’t feel the tension of the crowd waiting to be released. As soon as these guys started rocking, a full on mosh pit was going strong in the front. Who can blame the fans, we’ve been waiting nearly five years for these guys to come back with a tour.

I watched the first two or three songs right behind the pit, snapped a few photos, then couldn’t resist and joined in myself, with my friends following. We spent the rest of the set in there and can’t imagine the show without doing so. For such a hot day, it’s incredible that everyone kept dancing/moshing for the duration of their set. Things were steadily pretty crazy, but it truly hit the fan when “Romantic Rights” came on. It was hot, sweaty, and crazy in the pit, but it was contagious fun as well.

I don’t think the band has any plans to get back together, but I can live with that now because last nights concert was straight up fun. It was as rock and roll as you can ask for. It was hot, sweaty, and half the time I was out of breath and bracing my surroundings. I wouldn’t want it any other way with DFA1979. The band seemed to be having a lot of fun, and it seemed like they haven’t missed a beat even after spending so much time apart.

In summary, last night I saw two bands: One who have been taking a big chunk of my present (The Drums), and another who took up a big chunk of my past (DFA). It was an odd eclectic mix that may not have worked for others, but it was a great contrast of my musical past and present that added up to an awesome summer night.

Here’s a setlist I snagged post show:

R.I.P. Amy Winehouse

By Will, July 23rd 2011 — with 8 comments

Update:
My original post came off very judgmental, which wasn’t my intention. I was just expressing my sadness that such a talent left us. Sorry if it came off as anything else. I edited it a bit to try and stand by this point.

Amy Winehouse is dead. Is anyone surprised? The sad truth is no one is surprised. As tough as it is to admit, we all saw this coming.

Earlier today she was found dead in her London apartment at the eerie age of 27 – joining the likes of Cobain, Hendrix, Morrison and Joplin as talented musicians who left us way too early.

It wasn’t a secret that she was struggling to fight her addiction. She could hardly perform a single show without going through some kind of turmoil. She was sent to rehab, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough. I guess at some point people around you have enough and leave it up to you. The last memory that most people will have of her is that terrible performance that she gave in Belgrade.

She was supposed to be the future of pop music. She was an incredible talent who was able to capture the hearts of everyone. Not many artists had the cross appeal that she had. Fans of all types of music and genres could appreciate that amazing voice that she had. It’s just sad that her career has always been – and always will – be overshadowed by all of her troubles.

We lost a real talent today, and it’s a damn shame. She truly could’ve been one of the best, but it looks as if she wasted it all on her addiction. It’s sad, really sad.

R.I.P. Amy Winehouse

“You Know I’m No Good” always connected with me out of all her songs. That’s for you below:
