Ume – Captive

By Will, July 22nd 2011

Ume hail from Austin, Texas and seem to have brought the scorching heat with them on their single, “Captive”. It’s a bold rocker that hits you hard in it’s face, never losing steam. Think of them as a fantastic blend of Metric and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Great female vocals backed up by ambitious rock. It’s over 100 degrees in New York today, but this song makes me forget that.

It’s from the bands sophomore album, Phantoms, due August 30 on Modern Outsider Records.

Summer Camp – Better Off Without You

By Will, July 22nd 2011 — with 3 comments

London duo Summer Camp are releasing their debut LP pretty soon. You can help them make it by donating to their pledgemusic page. They recently showcased their new song “Better Of Without You” on GVB and I couldn’t help but be swayed by their impressive vintage sound.

It seems like a lot of my favorite new music have traces of the 80s – or clear older influences. “Better Off Without You” is no different. Stream it below via GVB:

[new] St. Vincent – Surgeon

By Will, July 22nd 2011 — with 1 comment

St. Vincent is releasing her new album, Strange Mercy, via 4AD on September 13. All week fans have been tweeting #strangemercy in order to unlock a brand new mp3 from St. Vincent. The time has finally come, and the song “Surgeon” is our reward. It’s the song that she’s been teasing in the background of her super cool teaser videos.

“Surgeon” begins the operation in a relaxed dream state before diving deep into the skin fleshing out into areas of psychedelic muscle spasms and experimental grooves. The operation went well.

In other words, this track rules. Download it:

Kuhlamity – My Relation

By Will, July 22nd 2011 — with 1 comment

Kuhlamity is not only from my hometown, but he’s a talented mc. I know him as Kamron Bahani, but when he’s busy spitting out smart verses on tracks like “My Relation” he goes by Kuhlamity. For someone so young, he offers a refreshing perspective along with steady production. He’s already got something to show, having previously worked with members of Army of the Pharaohs a branch off of Jedi Mind Tricks.

Below you can take a listen to “My Relation”, a track that my friend Rogo caught before myself.

He’s releasing a mixtape entitled “Indulgence” on July 27th, which will be followed by his album Center Of A Tension, which is looking at a October 21 release date. For more on Kuhlamity, head to his facebook page and follow him on twitter.

Feist Shares Teaser Video

By Will, July 21st 2011

Feist delighted the world with her fantastic 2007 album, The Reminder. It’s been nearly four years since that album came out, and it may be time for a new one.

Feist just posted a 30 second video on her website calling it, “a glimpse to come.” It’s a dark and somewhat ominous video, but hey, at least we’re going to have some new Feist soon.

Max Min – Anonymous

By Will, July 21st 2011 — with 1 comment

Max Min just e-mailed me his delightful single “Anonymous”. It reminds me of the perfect indie pop that bands like Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin (+ Kevin Barnes vocals) do so well. It’s simple and to the point, and that’s why it works.

“Anonymous” is available to stream below. You can download a mp3 for free from Max. Just follow the directions here.

It’s got a music video as well. Watch that by hitting “read more”:

Pusha T’s “Trouble On My Mind”  has become one of my favorite rap tracks of the year. He and Tyler are a deadly combo. It’s really not fair. Something tells me it’s not the last we will see of the duo.

“Trouble On My Mind” now has a music video directed by Jason Goldwatch. Those two create plenty of havoc together. Part of me believes Tyler had a lot to do with this. It’s a complete shitshow.

Watch the video below via Red Bull:

Looks like Tyler’s video for “Yonkers” has been nominated for video of the year for the VMA’s. It’s quite a video. If you haven’t seen it yet, hit the jump:

The New Division – Opium

By Will, July 21st 2011

L.A. moody synth rockers The New Division are keeping me happy with their single, “Opium”. It’s the first from their debut album, Shadows, which is due out on September 27.

“Opium” is everything you want out of synth music. It’s very 80s, very dark, and (yes) very Joy Division. There may or may not be a reason that they named themselves The New Divison. We’ll leave that to the imagination.

All that matters is that this track “Opium” is sweeping me up right now. Who’d want to go back down?
