[mp3] Moonlight Mask – Julianna

By Will, August 3rd 2011 — with 2 comments

Just received an email from the somewhat mysterious, Moonlight Mask. It came with a song called “Julianna” and the following message:

Moonlight Mask is the new solo bedroom project from a guy living in the Midwestern part of America. Julianna is his first release.

The song is posted with lyrics on bandcamp. Is this the start of post-chillwave? You can decide by downloading it below:

Geoffrey O’Connor – Whatever Leads Me To You

By Will, August 3rd 2011 — with 3 comments

Geoffrey O’Connor is the frontman of Australian band, Crayon Fields. Vanity Is Forever is his debut album under his own name (he used to go by the moniker, Sly Hats).

“Whatever Leads Me To You” is a song from the album that can be yours right now. It’s got dramatic lovesick 80s song written all over it. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Vanity Is Forever will be released September 27th via Chapter Music.

[new] Neon Indian – Polish Girl

By Will, August 3rd 2011 — with 3 comments

Neon Indian’s new album, Era Extraña, is going to grace eager audiences on September 13. We previously heard album track, “Fallout” last week. Today NPR premiered another new song, this time we got “Polish Girl”.

It’s another winner, further tacking the blipped out world that Alan has mapped out so well. Once again he’s pushing his sound to a more polished direction while also keeping those chillwave elements that took him this far.

Listen to the song below via NPR:

If you dig it, pre-order the album from Neon Indian’s website right now. There are a few package deals available, one that includes a bleep labs custom synth. Yes, you read that correctly. Go check it out.

Sufjan Stevens @ Prospect Park (August 2, 2011)

By Will, August 3rd 2011 — with 4 comments

Sufjan Stevens absolutely dazzled me tonight. When I saw him perform an early Age Of Adz show last November at The Beacon Theater, it was a great show but one could tell that the tour was just getting started. This time the Age Of Adz themed tour was in full force, better than ever before.

Age Of Adz, the latest album from the soon to be legendary singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens has only gotten better with time. The same can be said with it’s accompanying tour, that ends tomorrow night. Sufjan makes good use of the $35 ticket that he charged. It features an incredible light show, a huge screen, trippy effects, and costumes for his larger than life backing band.

The setlist was obviously Age Of Adz dominated, with colorful costumes and lights enhancing their already bright glow. Everything from the bands performance to their eccentric dancing worked even better than last time. The band seemed to have figured out what worked, and pushed it to its delightful limit. “Impossible Soul” was once again a highlight of the set.  They nailed it perfectly, all 25 glorious minutes of it.

The true highlights came from Sufjan’s earlier, folkier side. At the end of his set Sufjan comforted the crowd with the notion that he will always be a folk musician at heart. One can’t argue with that statement after his triumphant performances of “Seven Swans” (the opening song), “Concerning The UFO Sighting Near Highland” and the always faithful, “Casmir Pulaski Day”.

Was there any other song for him to leave us with but “Chicago”? I can still remember the magical senation that overcame me when I discovered it oh so many years ago. The feeling still hasn’t left me. Goosebumps were once again raised during the emotional finish that proves that “Chicago” is not only a modern classic, but a masterpiece. It was the cherry on top of a wonderful evening, an unforgettable show that will have me back for more once he delivers more music.

Hopefully it won’t take five years again.

(My Brightest Diamond opened. I only caught the 2nd half of her set but I’ve definitely been missing out on her. Pretty great voice. Going to look into her.)

Setlist:
1. Sevens Swans
2. Too Much
3. Age Of Adz
4. Heirloom
5. I Walked
6. Now That I’m Older
7. Get Real Get Right
8. Vesuvius
9. I Want To Be Well
10. Futile Devices
11. Impossible Soul

Encore:
12. Concerning The UFO Sighting Near Highland
13. Casimir Pulaski Day
14. Chicago

The Walkmen Begin Work On New Album

By Will, August 1st 2011

The Walkmen have begun work on their new album according to their twitter page. Yesterday the band tweeted that they’ve been hard at work on new songs, and are going to get them ready in a few weeks with producer Phil Ek.

I was at their set at Bonnaroo this year and recorded a new song that they played. Who knows, it just may end up on the new record:

“Lights In The Sky” is the new single from The Moth And The Mirror, a Scottish group made up of various members of Scottish bands such Arab Strap, Frightened Rabbit, The Reindeer Section and Admiral Fallow. For some reason I thought it would be a light folk-inspired affair, and I was dead wrong. “Lights In The Sky” drips through dark corridors of mysterious psychedelic dreams. It’s rocking good.

It will appear on This World, Honestly the bands debut release on the Scottish label, Olive Grove Records. It’s available to download for free on their bandcamp page. Take a listen below:

Widowspeak – Gun Shy

By Will, August 1st 2011

I haven’t been able to stop listening to Widowspeak ever since Ethan of Indian Rebound recommended them to me. Earlier this year they released a few 7″ singles on Captured Tracks which includes the magnificent “Gun Shy”. The label will also release the bands s/t debut album on August 9, only a few days away. It didn’t take long for the band to grab my attention with such an effective sound that “Gun Shy” displays. Take a listen:

Gun Shy:

Can’t wait to listen to the album in full and see what else these guys can do. For now take a listen to “Nightcrawlers”, another song from the album. I also threw in their cover of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” that they did. It’s just as good as Washed Out’s. Enjoy.

The band are playing a record release show this Tuesday at Glasslands. I’d be there but I already have tickets for Sufjan’s show in Prospect Park. Not a bad excuse, right?
