[new] Florence & The Machine – What The Water Gave Me

By Will, August 23rd 2011 — with 3 comments

All I have to say to the new Florence & the Machine track, “What The Water Gave Me” is wow. She may have played it when I saw her at Bonnaroo, but I’m not 100% sure.

It’s an absolutely epic track that will surely continue her fast paced success. It’s the first taste of her new album, and what a taste it is.

The untitled LP will be released in the UK on November 7 via Island, with a U.S. release coming later in the month.

[Introducing]: The Van Goghs

By Will, August 22nd 2011 — with 2 comments

I still remember listening to Arctic Monkeys demos and having that giddy feeling that I discovered something really special. Who knows if The Van Goghs will be the next Arctic Monkeys, but that doesn’t matter. What does is that they are a great young talent that deserves your attention.

The band hails from York, Pennsylvania and deliver the exciting rock goods. For a young band they sound self assured and confident, which reminded me a lot of some band from Sheffield. Three songs are available at their soundcloud page, and they are enough to validate this band as one to watch.

“Let Go Ego” sounds like a rough demo of an Arctic Monkeys track fronted by Miles Kane (already a good thing). “Space Elevator” has a youthful aesthetic that is impossible to ignore. You wouldn’t be wrong to mistake the band for young British rockers after one listen to the catchy little number, “Falling From Bombay”.

The Watercourse Sessions may or may not be the name of an upcoming ep or lp. It’s what shows up as the album tag for “Space Elevator”. No matter what it ends up being called, I’m already excited for it.

Grab these songs below and find out why The Van Goghs are ones to get excited for:

Overlord – What Do You Want Me For?

By Will, August 22nd 2011 — with 2 comments

Overlord may sound like a metal bands name but you got them all wrong. They are a indie pop band from Brooklyn. Listen to single “What Do You Want Me For?” from their already released 2011 album, In Soviet Russia, My Heart Breaks You.

It’s as feel good and delightful as warm indie rock should be. It’s truly a shame I’m only discovering them now.

The album was released on April 1st via Storm Tower Records. For more on Overlord visit them on their website or facebook.

New York City Cops – Summer Sun

By Will, August 20th 2011 — with 1 comment

“Summer Sun” is a really solid demo from a young English act called New York City Cops. I’m taking a wild guess that these guys are fans of The Strokes. They hit the nail on the head with that sound on “Summer Sun” a feel good track that could have easily been recorded in your garage.

Nothing gets lost on the way though. Similar to those NYC rockers, there’s just something instant about their sound. The recording may be rough around the edges, but I have a feeling they don’t mind it that way.

An update on their facebook page tells us that they are planning to finish a 5-track EP for a (hopeful) October release date.

The music video for RHCP’s new single, “The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie” sees the band taking a Venice Beach rooftop by storm. Tons of on lookers are enjoying the event, and it looks like a lot of fun. It’s a great music video, despite what your current thoughts on the band are.

That bassline is still sounding tight.

Moonlight Mask: Singles

By Will, August 19th 2011

I really liked Moonlight Mask’s debut effort, “Julianna”. Now the mysterious artist has released three new songs as part of a free mini ep simply titled “Singles”. It’s a strong collection of new wave inspired late night dance tracks that call to mind the early days of Cut Copy (especially “A Coruña”). There’s a reason the ep’s release date says July 1977.

Download all the songs at bandcamp and take a listen below:

[new] Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin – Yellow Missing Signs

By Will, August 19th 2011 — with 3 comments

On October 18 Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin will release Tape Club, a 26 song compilation from the band. The album will tackle some of the best songs that didn’t make their LP’s or just got left behind on the way. The band has been around for 10 years and only released three albums in that span. So it’s safe to say that they had plenty of songs in their vault ready to share with the world.

For instance here’s “Yellow Missing Signs” a track from the album that sees them experiment with an electronic based sound. It’s still got the SSLYBY warmth that makes them so damn likeable.

Tape Club is available to pre-order from Polyvinyl Records.
