Radiohead @ Roseland Ballroom (September 29, 2011)

By Will, September 30th 2011 — with 6 comments

You couldn’t have scripted it any better. Radiohead announce that they are playing New York City for two nights, one of which just happens to be the night before my 21st birthday. It just so happens I’m home from break, and somehow scored two tickets on ticketmaster. If that’s not fate working it’s magic, I don’t know what is.

The last time I saw Radiohead was at All Points West (night one, night two), which was the last time they played the New York area. This is arguably one of “the” shows of 2011, right next to LCD Soundsystem’s farewell. You don’t get many opportunities to see Radiohead in places like Roseland Ballroom.

Radiohead’s illustrious career has proven that there is no genre of music that they can’t tackle. They are able to evolve in ways that most bands can only dream about. This trend trickles over to their live shows. They take songs that we all know and love, and deliver them in ways that expand your mind to its full capacity. Next thing you know, your mind is blown.

The night was considerate to The King Of Limbs, which was no surprise. What was a surprise was just how ferocious “Good Morning Mr Magpie” is live. It’s a three headed animal that is relentless in all the right ways.

Getting to hear “Subterranean Homesick Alien” is an achievement in itself. It’s just one of those songs that serves as a reminder of just how special Radiohead is. Thom Yorke and the rest of the band were all smiles and they looked like they were having a blast. It really came through on the veteran tracks such as “The National Anthem”, “Like Spinning Plates”, and “Everything In Its Right Place”.

From “15 Step” to “Bodysnatchers”, and “Reckoner”, the In Rainbows tracks are still going very strong. In between all this the band surprised us with the first ever full band performance of “Supercollider”, a real treat indeed.

“Nude” was the final song of the night, and it ended literally as the clock struck midnight, taking me towards my new adulthood. Here I am, now 21 years of age. It’s a great feeling that became that much more special because it was spent with Radiohead.

That’s not something many people get to say.

Texture Like Sun – Bottle

By Will, September 28th 2011 — with 2 comments

“Bottle” is the first single from Texture Like Sun’s forthcoming debut album. The album was recorded over a course of a year in Darwin and Melbourne, Australia. It’s a haunting track textured to create effects that are both beautiful and chilling. You won’t be able to shake his vocals.

Remember the name Texture Like Sun. If this guy keeps making music to the quality of “Bottle, he’s going to continue to be impossible to ignore.

[music video]: Holy Ghost! – Hold My Breath

By Will, September 28th 2011 — with 1 comment

Holy Ghost! have released a music video for the fantastic “Holy My Breath”. The video was directed by Ben Fries, who does a great job creating a montage of DFA behind the scenes photos for the video. Look carefully and you’ll see James Murphy, members of LCD Soundsystem, The Rapture, and even a quick shot of LCD’s last show at MSG.

This is how you make a music video:

[watch]: Alex Turner KEXP Session

By Will, September 28th 2011 — with 1 comment

Alex Turner dropped by Seattle’s KEXP studios to perform an acoustic session that included Arctic Monkeys’ Suck It And See tracks, “Reckless Serenade”, “Suck It And See”, and “Love Is A Laserquest”.

Don’t know if Turner’s vocals have ever sounded this good. He’s in perfect form on all three tracks.

All videos are posted at the jump, which includes a complete video with all the performances/interview. Grab mp3′s after the jump:

Bloc Party: What’s Happening?

By Will, September 28th 2011

Bloc Party’s career has literally just been going downhill for years, and now it looks like they’ve hit rock bottom. As you all know, the bands lead singer Kele has been busy doing his solo work. It seemed like it was just to get all that electronic inspiration out of him, but now it seems like it’s something he wants to do…more permanently. (hear his new single here – i’m not a fan)

A week ago Kele noted that he thought he was out of the band when he happened to catch Russell Lissack, Gordon Moakes, and Matt Tong entering a NYC rehearsal space without him. That was all last week.

Now, Lissack has told NME that the band wants to get back together but realizes Kele is busy doing solo stuff. They considered doing an instrumental thing, but they’re also considering getting a singer to make new music and return to doing live shows.

It’s not really a secret because Kele’s been pretty busy doing solo stuff and it looks like he’s going to be doing that a bit longer. The other three of us wanted to meet up and make music. We were talking about just doing an instrumental thing, but now we might get a singer as well, to properly put some music out and play some shows.

Kele responded today on his blog with a post, titled “God Bless Bloc Party”:

hmm, i dont know what to make of this. a big part of me is laughing HARD at all of this but another part of me is all like WTF? im quite curious as to what a bloc party audition would be like? i wonder if they would let me sit on the panel so i could be a judge tyra banks style?

To top off all the different reports, Bloc Party’s website now says:

BLOC PARTY IS STILL BLOC PARTY

along with this image:

Remember when it was a good time to be a Bloc Party fan? I do. I was a junior in high school. I’m about to graduate college in a few months. That makes me very sad. Time to go play Silent Alarm.
