Cali Strauhs – You Know What I Mean (Cults cover)

By Will, September 11th 2011 — with 1 comment

Cali Strauhs is not only a dear friend of mine, but a very talented singer who I just know is gonna make it someday. Cults are one of the many bands we both crushed over this summer, so it’s no surprise to see her cover “You Know What I Mean”.

Cal’s version is focused on the emotion found in Madeline Follin’s vocals. She turns the song on it’s head delivering a emotion driven version stripped down to it’s core.

It’s a beautiful cover. One that you shouldn’t ignore. Listen below:

[music video]: Youth Lagoon – Montana

By Will, September 10th 2011

Youth Lagoon’s “Montana” is one of the true standouts of 2011. I still get goosebumps every time I listen. It’s music video does a perfect job collecting all the fragments of emotion that the song leaves on us and collected them visually. It’s a music video that really leaves an impression on the listener, and now I can’t imagine the song without it. May as well chalk up a best video of 2011 to “Montana” as well.

Job well done director Tyler T Williams.

“Montana” is taken from Youth Lagoon’s debut LP, The Year of Hibernation, out September 27 via Fat Possum.

The Morning Clouds – A Walk Home

By Will, September 10th 2011 — with 2 comments

“A Walk Home” is a delightful track taken from The Morning Clouds debut EP, Wasted Youth Blues. The Morning Clouds is the project of Denver’s Josh Wambeke. Josh recorded everything by himself, and you can get a sense that songs like “A Walk Home” are dear to his heart. You get a sense of the fragility and emotional depth that come natural when someone records straight from their bedroom. There’s no onlookers, no outside influences. Just a man and his music.

Wasted Youth Blues drops October 11th via Lefse Records. Pre-Order it here.

Thom Yorke Sings On 2 Modeselektor Tracks

By Will, September 10th 2011

Thom Yorke lends guest vocals on two brand new tracks from German electronic act, Modeselektor. He’s guesting on their new LP Monkeytown, on two tracks called “Shipwreck” and “This”. It’s truly amazing to see just how diverse this man is.

Check out both of these tracks thanks to the folks at 107.7 The End:

North Highlands – Benefits

By Will, September 10th 2011 — with 1 comment

“Benefits” is the debut single from Brooklyn 5-piece, North Highlands. It’s an enchanting track that dances around in a muggy shadow before toying with a sunnier sound that hints at flavors reminiscent of sweet summer air.

“Benefits” will appear on the bands debut LP, Wild One, due out on October 18th.

Tokyo Police Club ended up doing a unique project called Ten Days, Ten Covers, Ten Years. For 10 days the band gave themselves 10 hours to complete one cover. They did this 10 times, for each year in the previous decade. They covered all types of artists, such as: LCD Soundsystem, Jimmy Eat World, The Strokes, Kelly Clarkson, Phoenix, Queens Of The Stone Age, and more.

These guys did a great job overall and should be applauded for the effort. They made great choices. I personally love that they went with a Harlem Shakes cover. Take a listen to the entire thing below:

The whole collection will be available to purchase on the bands website or iTunes on October 4th. Check out the tracklisting after the jump:
