Archive for October, 2011

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Thom Yorke revealed that Radiohead has plans to return back to their Oxford, England recording studio this December/January. Although he’s unsure what exactly is going to come out of the songs, he did say that they have one song in the works, called “Come to Your Senses”.

Thom also said that his record as Atoms For Peace should be done by the end of the year as well.

This winter has some exciting happenings for Radiohead fans. 2012 will see a big tour and possibly new music. Doesn’t get much better than that.

Here’s my review of night 2 of Radiohead at Roseland.

[new]: Ben Folds Five – Stumblin’ Home Winter Blues

By Will, October 14th 2011 — with 1 comment

October 11 brought the release of Ben Folds retrospective compilation, The Best Imitation of Myself: A Retrospective. We can all agree that one of the best parts of this release is that there are three new Ben Folds Five songs attached to it.

We already heard “House” and “Tell Me What I Did”. Now we have a chance to listen to the final new track, “Stumblin’ Home Winter Blues”. It’s a somber ballad not shy of showing plenty of substance, in typical Ben Folds Five fashion. We can only wish that the band would reunite to release more stuff of this quality.

Check out a stream of it below:

If you haven’t already, but the compilation album right here.

Tennis are hard at work on a new album that The Black Keys’ Patrick Carney is producing. It should come out early next year. To keep us warmed up until then, they released a cover of The Zombies classic hit, “Tell Her No”. It’s good. Real good.

Here’s what the band’s email about the cover had to say:

We’ve spent the last several months writing and preparing for what we hope will keep us busy all winter. We will be announcing a Forest Family release in the next couple of weeks as well as tour dates to make up for the Vaccines tour cancellations. Also, we are excited to announce the existence of our next album (produced by our new friend Patrick Carney) coming out early next year. In the meantime, we made this cover of the Zombies “Tell Her No.” It’s been a long time favorite of ours and is the best use of a lone-clap we’ve ever heard.

Mezzanine Owls – Obstacle // Tethered To The Fountain

By Will, October 12th 2011 — with 1 comment

This week Los Angeles’ very own Mezzanine Owls released a new 7″ featuring “Obstacle” and “Tethered To The Fountain”. Just like all good shoegaze influenced rock it has just enough of a fuzzy influence over their pop influences.

“Obstacle” is a hazy sprawling that is drunken dramatic, in the best way possible. “Tethered To The Fountain” delivers the pop goods in tripped out fashion, with a very memorable chorus. It doesn’t even consider wasting a second of it’s brisk 2:30 of life.

Only 250 copies of a the vinyl are available to purchase via Jaxart. Be sure to download both songs below:

Karen O has done a most delicate cover of “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys”, A Waylon Jennings song that Willie Nelson popularized back in the late 70′s.

One Thirty BPM found the cover which is attached to a short film that was created for Chipotle’s annual Halloween fundraiser Boorito, which trys to raise awareness about the struggles that family farmers face against industrialized farms.

The short film is called Abandoned and it was directed by David Altobelli. Watch it and check out Karen O’s cover below:

Who would’ve thought that Cut Copy would remix Death Cab For Cutie. Sounds like an odd pairing, but it doesn’t sound so odd once the magic is at work.

Cut Copy reworked Death Cab’s “Doors Unlocked and Open’. It will be on Death Cab’s upcoming release,  Keys and Codes Remix EP (November 22 via Atlantic Records).

Take a listen to the remix:
