Johnny Marr has collaborated with select artists such as Best Coast for a new project with Ray-Ban called “Ray-Ban Raw Sounds”. He helped motivate the artists by offering up pieces of inspiration such as a photograph, a poem, a quote, a old map of downtown Manhattan, and a video of him playing the guitar.
For his collaboration with Best Coast, Marr offered Bethany the photo and it resulted in the love longing effort, “In Your Sleep”. Say what you want about Best Coast, but no one can deny their incredible work ethic.
Stream “In Your Sleep” over at Spin. The other tracks are done by Au Revoir Simone, Mona, and Tom Vek. All can be found at the same link.
North Highlands debut album Wild One is officially out today, and it’s available to stream for free. “Benefits” was the track that first caught my attention. If you liked that track, you’ll thoroughly enjoy Wild One as a whole.
Stream it below via the bands bandcamp page:
Check out the band’s CMJ tour dates after the jump. I’m definitely going to try and catch a performance:

The Eversons are guitar rock band hailing from New Zealand that sound like a beautiful hybrid of Art Brut and Pavement. Guitars not shy on the hooks, and vocals that instantly called to mind Eddie Argos. In other words, indie guitar rock at it’s best.
“Hyacinth Girl” is a song taken from their debut self titled EP, and what a catchy little tune it is. Although it sounding pretty nice during my first listen int didn’t hit me until much later. Laden hooks and hidden agendas come racing through the seems and the next thing you know you’re humming along incredibly impressed.
I’m convinced that these guys got a bright future ahead of themselves. This is as polished of a debut as you can hope for. Call me a believer.
Their self titled debut EP is available to download for free via Lil’ Chief Records. Stream it after the jump, but first check out the video for the awesome “Hyacinth Girl”, or stream a mp3:

Surfer Blood’s new EP Tarot Classics isn’t released until October 25th. Even so, Surfer Blood are about to begin work on album number two.
The band just tweeted that they are about to begin pre-production with producer, Phil Ek, who has worked with the likes of Built To Spill, The Shins, Fleet Foxes, The Dodos and Band Of Horses.
The band has also been tweeting some photos of themselves in a studio, one of which may be possible track titles.
For now, here’s “Miranda” a great cut from Tarot Classics:
We Can’t Enjoy Ourselves fantastic 2010 EP, One Belongs Here More Than You (download for free), got some love in my collection last November. Yet in a rare error on my part I never posted anything about the guys. I’m sorry to all parties involved.
However, the Brooklyn band is back with a new single titled “Your Darkest Thoughts Will Shine” and it’s not one to miss. A slow paced waltzy feel gives way to lead singer Giovanni’s eccentric vocals that share lines between Morrissey, Colin Meloy and Alec Ounsworth. A jangly pop sound poses an interesting juxtaposition between the sadness that Giovanni hints at.
“Your Darkest Thoughts Will Shine” will be off Never Listen To The Ones You Love being released on 4:3 Records.

The Roots are surely one of the busiest acts in the business. They spend 5 nights a week as Jimmy Fallon’s late night band, and between that, they found time to record a new album. The LP is titled undun and it will be released on December 6 via Def Jam.
The first single is the suave cool slow jam “Make My” which features Big K.R.I.T. It’s pretty awesome. Stream that below:
The album chronicles the life of a man named Redford Stephens who passed away in 1999. Here’s how Questlove described the album in a press release:
At this point in our career we’d like for our work to have a unifying theme, and an experiential quality. We’ve been intentionally making our albums shorter in length so that they can be experienced as a continuous work. The music is band-oriented with an eye on the moody cinematic. As a DJ, I am the King of playlists, but I don’t want our albums to feel like a playlist or a mixtape for that matter. We want to tell stories that work within the album format and we want the stories to be nuanced and useful to people. undun is the story of this kid who becomes criminal, but he wasn’t born criminal. He’s not the nouveau exotic primitive bug-eyed gunrunner like Tupac’s character Bishop in “Juice”… he’s actually thoughtful and is neither victim nor hero. Just some kid who begins to order his world in a way that makes the most sense to him at a given moment… At the end of the day… isn’t that what we all do?
How can you not respect that? Catch the tracklist after the jump:

At first glance, you’re probably questioning Coldplay‘s move to collaborate with pop princess Rihanna. But then you realize that it’s actually not as odd as it sounds, as they are two of the biggest stars of their respective genres.
Get used to hearing “Princess Of China” because my instincts tell me that we’re bound to months of constant airplay of this single. Coldplay are radio juggernauts as it is. Throw Rihanna and a big fat hook into the mix, and you got a sure fire hit. You may as well try to love it, cause it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.
It’s a pretty good pop effort that’s likely to be stuck in my head all week, whether I like it or not.
“Princess Of China” is off of Mylo Xyloto, out on October 24. The song is sure to spark a debate between fans of both artists. What do you think of it?
