The Drums @ Bowery Ballroom (11/2/2011)

By Will, November 4th 2011 — with 1 comment

Wednesday night’s show at Bowery Ballroom was the third time I’ve seen them this year. I’ve enjoyed ever performance more than the last, and this show was no different. The band sounds as tight as can be with the new lineup, and they really gave it there all. The set saw a fair breakdown between both Portamento and The Drums. They also played early cuts “I Felt Stupid” & “Baby It’s Not The Point”.

Johnny was one point last night, as entertaining as ever with his dramatic moves. If you’re a fan of the band, don’t sleep on their live show. It re-creates the mood and emotions found on their recordings, focusing on the best elements that just jump out live. “Down By The Water” and “The Future” are two examples of songs that really transform live. Hearing “What You Were” live after spending amble time with the recording solidified it as one of my favorite tracks of the year.

Check out some more photos and the setlist, after the jump:

The XX have started recording for their new album. The band recently posted on their facebook page telling fans that new sessions have begun. They also pointed out that they started a tumblr where they will post their inspirations, pictures, and favorite songs. I’m sure they will keep us posted with some inside access to the new recording sessions.

Check out the tumblr here, and check out the first song that they shared with us, after the jump:

The Antlers Announce (together) EP

By Will, November 2nd 2011

On November 22nd, The Antlers will release a new EP titled, the (together) EP (via Frenchkiss Records). The EP is comprised of b-sides, alternate takes, remixes and covers recorded during and after sessions for their fantastic album, Burst Apart.

The band says that the goal of the EP is to:

highlight the community that has grown around the Antlers’ music and their Brooklyn recording studio, presenting the band as more of a collective than a singular group. Upwards of ten artists came together to make the EP possible—a sharp increase from the band’s previous 1-5 member makeup—with the different collaborations changing the way the Antlers operate as a band.

The EP features “Tongue Tied,” the first track sung by the band’s Darby Cicci, and the bands cover of the XX’s “VCR”. It also sees the band collaborating with Neon Indian, and Bear Hands.

The band is playing Webster Hall on December 10th. Tickets are still on sale. Trust me, the band brings it live.

Check out the tracklisting for the EP below:

[Introducing]: Young Maverick

By Will, November 2nd 2011 — with 1 comment

Young Maverick has from down under in Melbourne, Australia. A friend of the band tipped them to me, and I’m really happy that he did. One listen to their clean cut single, “Reception Deception”, was enough to seal the deal.

Effortless fun guitar rock that is pure pleasure on the ears. That’s what music should be, and that is exactly what these guys deliver. So much so, that I was instantly reminded of the younger days of Phoenix. You know, that band from France that you may have heard of.

There’s nothing quite like a feel good rock song. If these guys stay on point, I think these guys are in for quite a ride.

Download a mp3 of “Reception Deception” below, and be sure to check out their facebook page for streams of two other songs:

Brassland, the independent imprint co-run by The National’s Aaron and Bryce Dessner, hit their 10th anniversary this month. To celebrate they’re releasing a free track everyday this week . Tomorrow’s track is a demo of a track from The National called “High Beams”.

For those who are only familiar with High Violet/Boxer, be prepared to see a rawer side of the band. It’s vintage, old school, The National. It will be made available to download for free at Brassland on Thursday, but you can stream it below thanks to Pitchfork:

Brazillian Bands Play Tribute To The Strokes Is This It

By Will, November 1st 2011 — with 4 comments

Brazilian website Rock ‘n’ Beats asked some of the best independent artists in the scene to help them with their Strokes Tribute album for Is This It.

It’s not the first tribute album as you well know, but it’s fairly different. Here’s how the site described the collection:

The goal was to make a different collection, to escape the traditional Strokes’ guitars and Julian Casablancas’ heavy voice. We selected the artists in order to actually make the tracks new, with a different personality to add to each song.

This is the first time you’ve heard these songs like this. Each song has it’s own feel, reminding me off the light hearted fun of Little Joy. These versions have space to breath, becoming breathtaking all over again.

The whole album will soon be downloadable, but it’s available to stream only for now. Head here to stream the collection. Check out one of the covers below. It’s Cícero’s version of, “Barely Legal”.
