Empress Of has been receiving a lot of mysterious buzz after releasing only one song and a slew of samples. She made her first live performance ever during CMJ on Thursday night at Gorilla Vs Bear/Yours Truly + Forest Family Records show at 285 Kent in Brooklyn. It marked the public kickoff of her career, as well as her birthday. It was a big night for Lorely Rodriguez.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from the show. Not to say I doubted her talented – but a first show is a first show. Nerves, lack of experience: all of these things come into consideration. Would the songs be ready to go live?

Empress Of was a 3-piece with Lorely on vocals as well as a keyboardist and a drummer. They collectively sounded tight – not like a band who were playing their first gig. It was a brief set, but one that was impressive. Her songs were lively with a great balance of heavy synth/percussion sounds that were carried by her light vocals. She has upbeat bangers and slow jams that both worked quite well.

Empress Of is the real deal folks. Excited to see what else she can do in the future.
