Metronomy have come a long way over the years, so it was a treat to see them play a sold out show at somewhere the size of Music Hall of Williamsburg. It was actually my first time ever seeing them, so I was glad I was able to preserve the intimacy that I’m sure their earliest shows would have provided.

The Range kicked off the show with a really excellent set that got the crowd into things quickly. The Range is the project of Providence-based producer James Hinton, who showed there was something different about him that immediately struck a chord with me. I’m usually not one for producers/DJs in the live setting, as usually I feel that they have trouble translating in the live environment. The Range had no problem doing so, as he mixed in various loops and samples that were often hip-hop based and used in very interesting ways. Reaction from the crowd was slow at first, but by the end of his set he had the crowd moving and grooving along with him and cheering him feverishly as he finished his set. It was a lively and entertaining set. I was impressed.

I guess I underestimated the power of Metronomy. Before catching them live I never knew how passionate their fans were. From the slow burn of opener and new track (off new album Love Letters) “Montrous,” the crowd was eager to move along with every note that Metronomy’s Joseph Mount offered up. Even though the next two songs that followed were also new (A Month Of Sundays” & “Love Letters”), the crowd still moved as if they knew it already. The reaction to the new Love Letters material was strong, but it was the delivery of tracks from The English Riviera like “The Look” and “She Wants” that sent everyone into a craze. Every song was oozing with dance vibes, from the sizzling synths to the rip-tide bass of bassist Gbenga Adelekan, it all equated one hell of a good time.

From the looks of it, Love Letters is going to be a good one. Find their setlist below along with some photos of both Metronomy and The Range posted below
