Last week Wild Beasts released their amazing new album Present Tense (via Domino Records). Tomorrow they play a sold out show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. I can’t wait for it.
Tonight at 8 p.m. the band’s duel vocalists Hayden Thorpe and Tom Fleming stopped by record store Other Music to perform a free acoustic set instore, featuring stripped down versions of songs from the new album. Getting to hear Present Tense tracks such as “Sweet Spot”, “A Simple Beautiful Truth” and “Mecca” was spellbinding. These tracks were broken down to their wholesome core, fully allowing all the emotions to flow in every which way. It was cool to see the acoustic arrangements of the tracks that are more electronic/synth based in their original recorded form. Although I can’t wait to see hear those versions tomorrow night, there was something special about hearing beautiful versions of the songs in a record store.
Although it was just Hayden and Tom performing, the band’s other half (Ben Little and Chris Talbot) were watching from the back. The final song was dedicated to them, and it was a fun cover of Miley Cyrus’ mega-hit, “Wrecking Ball.” It was a fun moment that was an unexpected little delight.
Find some photos from their performance below, along with a video recording of their “Wrecking Ball” cover. You may even spot a familiar face in the video.
