EMA, whose real name is Erika M. Anderson, is an artist that it took me some time to “understand.” My introduction to her was the rather epic track “California.” Although I wasn’t sure how I felt at the time, she had my attention, and I was certainly captivated. Over the years I let her music work its magic on me, gradually coming to an understanding over time.

This year she returned with her new album The Future’s Void, a record that I’m still digesting as of now, but one that I’m already recognizing for its remarkable power and moments of beauty.

Last night EMA played a very much sold out show at Mercury Lounge, and it was my first time ever getting to see her perform. She brings a certain intensity live that is very honest, very personal, and ultimately very real. She connects with you on a different sort of level, something that is very appropriate in a setting like Mercury Lounge. Although songs like recent single “Satellites” are rather large in scope, there’s something about seeing her contain them in a small setting that makes the show feel more appropriate. Whether its her making eye contact with you directly as she’s singing (sometimes more so mumbling) or lounging into the crowd to grab a fans hand, she finds a way to connect.

The songs, whether delivered in a harsh raw manner full of noise, or in a hushed tone along with ambiance, found there ways to work on you emotionally. This, along with her very personal and friendly stage banter, made for an even more personal experience. She playfully asked the crowd if we expected her to be more bitchy than she actually was, and to tell you the truth, I guess I sort of did. I was dead wrong as she was actually a sweetheart, just delivering songs in a no-bullshit manner that they certainly deserved.

EMA may not be an artist for everyone. For those willing to connect to music on a totally emotional level and to simply give in to the music, she’s your girl. When it comes to her live show, it’s one not to be missed.
