For my final Northside Festival showcase I stopped by Cameo Gallery to check out the White Irish showcase. I caught performances from White Rabbits, Ski Lodge, and Incan Abraham.

I caught L.A. rockers Incan Abraham first. Dana covered them earlier in the year, with the first of our portrait series before their set at Baby’s All Right. The group released their debut album Tolerance back in April, and brought its songs to live with big vocals and summer-ready rock anthems that filled the room out nicely.

Brooklyn group Ski Lodge
were up next. Now flashing a few new band members as a 5-piece band, the band sounded better than ever before. They played a few new songs as well as tracks from their debut album Big Heart which was released last year. It being fathers day and all, frontman Andrew Marr’s father was in attendance. He must have been proud, as the band sounded great.

I only briefly caught the tail-end of White Rabbits set (that’s them posted at the top of the post) at All Points West many years ago, but figured that catching an intimate set at Cameo would be a good way to make up for it. I didn’t realize that the band had basically gone full 2.0. Now only a three-piece, they sounded nothing like the White Rabbits of old, but rather dove into an experimental sound that sounded like Animal Collective meets 808s Kanye. Audio samples, and drone landscapes took over for the indie rock band that I remember. There seemed to be confusion in the air as the band played, with some people even asking each other if this was indeed White Rabbits playing. As they played the room slowly started to empty out. To tell you the truth, I can’t blame them. It was a disappointing performance that I’m still trying to wrap my head around.
