There’s no one that sounds quite like Joanna Newsom. Whether it’s her distinct majestic vocals or the fact the she elegantly plays the harp, it’s hard to find other artists to compare her to.
With that said, getting to see her perform live at The Apollo Theater on December 11 really hammered this point home. This was my first time seeing Newsom perform live, and it was as captivating and unusual of a live performance as I’ve seen. Her new album Divers is as great as all her previous work, and seeing it come to life was almost like seeing a classic Disney film come to life before your eyes. With her studio recordings, she’s creating her own fantasy universe that quite simply takes your mind to a spiritual elsewhere. The fact that she was able to recreate these magical sounds was a thing of beauty, that left me awestruck from start to finish.
I was completely swept off my feat by Joanna Newsom that night, and hope I can someday see her perform once again.
