On April 20 long-standing British electronic heroes Underworld made their long-awaited live return to New York at Terminal 5, in between their two weekend dates at Coachella this year. The tour was in support of their strong new album Barbara Barbara, We Face a Shining Future which was released on March 16 via Caroline International.
The band doesn’t play live stateside too often (the last time was at Roseland in 2010), making any appearance of theirs a truly can’t miss event. I only had the pleasure of catching them once, eight years ago at All Points West. While an unforgettable experience, it wasn’t quite like getting to see a performance of their own at Terminal 5 on April 20.
The duo of Karl Hyde and Rick Smith (also joined by Darren Price live) demonstrated that they still have got plenty of gas left in the tank, and then some. The new material off of Barbara Barbara, We Face a Shining Future, fit in effortlessly with their older material of 90s electronic that still sounds as timeless as ever. The group absolutely tore through a triumphant bass-thumping 18-song setlist that had all of the capacity Terminal 5 crowd dancing the night away.
Hopefully it won’t be another six years until Underworld make their live return to New York. But either way, I’ll be waiting and ready.
