On a hot summer night this past July, Ty Segall and his other, other new band Gøggs rolled through New York City for a show at Rough Trade in Williamsburg in support of their new album which came out on July 1st titled Gøggs (out via In the Red Records).
Gøggs features Ex–Cult’s Chris Shaw on vocals, fellow Fuzz member Charles Moothart on drums and Ty Segall on guitar (…and more, but we’ll get to that in a minute). The band only played a handful of shows this summer which made their stop in New York City that much more special.
As soon as the band took the stage I knew this show would be different, but different for all the right reasons. I decided to take the high ground to get photos from above as I knew there would be a mosh pit a few songs into the set (…and without fail, a mosh pit formed minutes after they began their set).
As with most garage rock, Gøggs’ sound was absolutely massive – it was loud, brash and everything you’d want from a Ty Segall side project. With Ty’s tour earlier this year with The Muggers, he was a full on frontman and wasn’t playing guitar so seeing Ty get back in the saddle and let loose playing guitar again was refreshing. He wasn’t holding anything back either – the night was full of epic guitar god–esque poses throughout the entire set.
What was even more impressive than Ty’s poses was just how quick the set was. Even with a few interment changes (Ty and Moothart switched guitar & drums for a few songs), the set was all rock, and absolutely no bullshit. All in all, the set was an exhilarating and blistering 24 minutes, which easily wins the quickest show of the year award by far. One thing is for sure, it left us wanting more and we can’t wait to see what Ty and friends cook up for the next album (…or other side, side, side project band).
