With the release of their expansive new album 22, A Million, Bon Iver brought the album to life this year, including a gigantic 9-show run in New York. After playing shows at Pioneer Works, Hammerstein Ballroom. The Capitol Theatre and Kings Theatre, on December 14, Justin Vernon and Bon Iver gave New Yorkers the most intimate experience yet at Music Hall of Williamsburg.

Bon Iver is at the point where they could conceivably play somewhere like Madison Square Garden. The stage setup for this tour was apparently well suited for all the big rooms and theatres that they took over during their NYC residency, but if it’s possible Music Hall of Williamsburg was almost too small for them. They were able to use their projections, but the effect wasn’t quite the same.

But still, the joy of seeing Bon Iver in a room that is now too small for them was an undeniably cool affair. Hearing all of 22, A Million in order was a moving experience, reshaping many emotions and feelings about certain tracks from previous listens on the record. They more than filled out the room, and throughout the room you could pick out a fan who was singing along as if he was holding onto each word with dear life.

In addition to the 10-song performance of the album, the encore featured a performance of “Creature Fear.” Considering the other shows during the residency got anywhere from 14-16 song sets, and they got the full show set up, there was an abruptness about the show, which only lasted 45-minutes. It was an enjoyable 45-minutes, but considering that tickets cost nearly $80 after fees, some fans felt that they got the shaft with the show that should’ve been the most memorable of the bunch.
