Legendary Scottish rockers The Jesus and Mary Chain have been at it for a longtime, but their show at Brooklyn Steel on May 14 marked my first time seeing the group. Led by the brotherly duo of Jim and William Reid, they returned this March with their seventh album, Damage and Joy, which was released via ADA / Warner Music Group

The band played a good chunk of the new album but also spread it out very evenly with their vast array of older material during their 24-song setlist, which featured not one, but two encores (with many fans getting faked out from the first, and running back in when they kicked into “Taste Of Cindy”). They brought out Sky Ferreira to help perform vocals on “Black and Blues” and “The Two Of Us,” which was a surprise, but a nice touch. The group delivered a fine performance of fuzzed out rock and roll that had most of the sold out crowd hanging their heads high in the air, with their eyes closed, taking all that glorious noise in with pleasure.
