The War On Drugs will release their new album A Deeper Understanding (their first for Atlantic Records) on August 25, so they’ve been hard at work doing the rounds of promotion, including a stop at Colbert where they performed current single, “Holding On.” While they were in town they announced a last minute intimate performance at Bowery Ballroom, much smaller than their upcoming show at Central Park.

Getting to see Adam Granduciel and the rest of The War On Drugs at Bowery at this point of their career was a total thrill. We got to hear new songs from the record including the two released singles “Holding On” and “Thinking Of A Place,” as well as two that we have yet to hear: “Pain” and “Strangest Thing.” Aside from a cover of Warren Zevon’s “Accidentally Like a Martyr,” the band gave us all the best of their 2014 breakthrough album Lost In The Dream, including “An Ocean in Between the Waves,” “Red Eyes” and of course, “Under The Pressure.”

Getting to see the band fill out a room like this with their anthemic rock was a thing to behold, and surely will place well on my eventually best shows of the year list.
