On June 16 Dawes continued their “An Evening With Dawes” tour in New York with a performance at The Capitol Theatre. These shows featured a night of only Dawes, playing not one, but two sets. The show was special for many reasons, but it was also hosted by 107.1 The Peak (easily the best radio station in the area) who were celebrating their 13th birthday.

Dawes were all business, giving fans almost every single offering that they would want to hear. After a few songs in, frontman Taylor Goldsmith greeted the crowd and told us that they “left the opening bands at home so we could play two nice long sets for you.” There was no bs, just Dawes grinding and delivering us hearty performances of their now trademark folk rock that kept the attention of the packed audience from start to finish. The fact that they ended the first set with “When My Times,” arguably their biggest hit, said a lot about the epic scope of this performance.

From there they opened the second set with Taylor performing an acoustic solo performance of “One Of Us,” before handing over the mic to his brother, and the bands drummer, Griffin Goldsmith, who performed “Roll Tide.” The night wasn’t just limited to one birthday, as it was also the 48th birthday of Dawes’ tour manager Gerry G. They brought him out for the encore, and he took over lead vocals for a fun, loose cover of The Grateful Dead’s “Going Down The Road Feeling Bad” before ending the night with “All Your Favorite Bands,” which the crowd took over and helped carry the torch to the finish line, in epic fashion.

Dawes gave us their all for 24 songs, spanning two and a half hours of material. It was one of the most impressive performances of the year, and further proof that Dawes have built their reputation the right way, becoming one of the strongest live acts going, whether the rest of the general public has caught on yet is another discussion entirely.
