As a 15-year-old kid just digging into the world of new music, I stumbled across a band named Silversun Pickups based on the strength of their two lead singles “Well Thought Out Twinkles” and “Lazy Eye.” I think I may have even bought a copy of their debut album Carnavas on CD at my local Best Buy, when that was still a normal thing to do.
Somehow after all this time and covering shows as I do, I had yet to see the band perform live, which is a big surprise as they only got bigger and bigger as the years passed. But I finally corrected that on November 17, when the band came to Brooklyn for a performance at Brooklyn Steel, just one night after they played at Terminal 5.
Kicking things off were tourmates Minus The Bear (who we last saw at Webster Hall in March), who played a short but efficent set mixing songs from their 2017 album Voids as well as a few standard favorites such as “Pachuca Sunrise” and “Absinthe Party At the Fly Honey Warehouse.”
It’s well over two years since Silversun Pickups released their last album Better Nature in 2015 and it sounds like one isn’t too far off. But the beauty off a show that’s not in support of a specific album is a more balanced set list that features cuts taken evenly from all of a bands album. This was more or less the case from Silversun Pickups that night who gave fans a healthy dose of material from all over their discography, and even switched things up setlist wise for fans that were also at Terminal 5, performing “Substitution,” instead of “Little Lover’s So Polite.”
