Ruler is the project of Seattle-based musician Matt Batey, best known for his work with both Rocky Votolato and Cataldo. Today is a special day for him as he officially released his debut album Winning Star Champion on Barsuk Records.

To help celebrate the release of the record we are going to focus on two highlights from the album. Let’s start off with the tracks opening number, the lively and energetic track that is “Petrified.” It certainly captures the spirit of the Pacific Northwest and a bit of a 90s old-school charm, both winning combinations that make his work a perfect fit on Barsuk. Fans of Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin will find plenty to love here.

Then there are the more electronic workings of “Get To You,” that straddles a fine line between synth pop and the same indie sound that we mentioned on the track before. Both tracks are very different from one another yet carry home a lot of the same spirit and DNA which helps hold the whole record together.

Find both songs available to stream below (plus watch the video for “Get To You,” as well as their Bandcamp where you can also buy it.
