Big Boi – Mama Told Me (feat. Little Dragon)

By Will Oliver, December 10th 2012 — with 1 comment

On Big Boi’s new album Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors his first single “Mama Told Me” features Kelly Rowland, instead of Little Dragon, who were originally supposed to appear on the album.

Label issues causes Rowland to replace Little Dragon, but that didn’t mean the recordings would go to waste. The Little Dragon version came out this weekend, and is now available to listen below. I think I actually prefer it to the album version. What do you think?

This is the version that Big Boi brought to Fallon on Friday, as he performed it live with Little Dragon at his side. Check that performance out after the jump. Check out my thoughts about Big Boi’s show at The Studio at Webster Hall here.

Big Boi @ The Studio at Webster Hall (December 8, 2012)

By Will Oliver, December 9th 2012 — with 1 comment

Big Boi dropped by the always great Studio at Webster Hall to give a rare intimate look at his live show. I saw him from afar at Bonnaroo 2011, so seeing him in the fantastic venue was a nice change.

Big Boi comes armed with a live guitarist, drummer, and DJ who created a rock atmosphere that spiced up all of his songs nicely. He wasn’t shy of promoting his new album Vicious Lies And Dangerous Rumors, as that was the purpose of the show. In total, the show was a breezy 45-50 minutes, so Big Boi had to pump everything out quick.

Surprisingly he gave us more Outkast classics than new material, which was a pleasant surprise. He gave electric versions of his Outkast classics “Ms. Jackson”, “Ghetto Musick”, “B.O.B.”, “ATLiens” which had the crowed energized and nostalgic. All the new songs he played (“Mama Told Me”, “CPU”, “Apple Of My Eye”) sounded great live.

It was a rare opportunity to see an artist like Big Boi in a great intimate space, and I was happy to attend.

[new]: Big Boi – She Hates Me (Feat. Kid Cudi)

By Will Oliver, December 3rd 2012

Next week Big Boi’s Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors finally comes out. He’s already leaked a good chunk of the album, with the Kid Cudi featured “She Hates Me” being the latest. It’s a solid cut from Big Boi who slows things down a bit, allowing Kid Cudi to work in a very-Cudi hook. Overall, a very smooth cut.

Slow down on those year end lists people. Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors is sounding good.

[new]: Big Boi – In The A (Feat. T.I. and Ludacris)

By Will Oliver, November 26th 2012 — with 4 comments

The December 11 release date of Big Boi’s new album Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors is slowly creeping up on us. Not a bad thing. What’s even better is that he keeps on slowly leaking out new tracks every week. This week we get the T.I. and Ludacris featured “In The A”.

It just screams Atlanta.

The latest track that Big Boi has shared from new album, Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors is “Lines”. It features both A$AP Rocky & Phantogram.

Phantogram provide a different instrumental atmosphere than Big Boi would normally be on, which actually somehow sounds like a mix of Imogen Heap and The Killers. Big Boi takes a risk, and it pays off. Respectful move, either way.

Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors comes out December 11 via Def Jam.

[new]: Big Boi – Mama Told Me (Feat. Kelly Rowland)

By Will Oliver, October 2nd 2012 — with 2 comments

Big Boi has released his first official single from new album Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors. It’s called “Mama Told Me” and features Destiny Child’s Kelly Rowland. (Remember, Little Dragon helped sing her part in the song’s live debut).

Feeding off a bouncy synth, “Mama Told Me” feeds of a loose vibrant energy, allowing Big Boi and Kelly plenty to work with. It’s a fun track, and one that Big Boi fans will have no problem kicking back to. I could see this doing well on the radio in no time.

Listen below via Rap-Up. (it has tags unfortunately)

Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors comes out November 13.

Big Boi premiered new single “Gossip” on Atlanta DJ Greg Street’s radio show. It features Big K.R.I.T. and UGK and is set to appear on Big Boi’s upcoming new album, Vicious Lies And Dangerous Rumors.

The song itself is more great Big Boi work, quick witty light speed verses. It’s fire. Take a listen below.

UPDATE(6/28 4:18 p.m.): Here’s the CD Quality Version:

Big Boi & Theophilus London have a brand new track titled “She Said OK” that features Tre Luce. It’s an not too subtle with it’s content, which you can probably use your imagination to figure out without even listening.

It’s more of a slow down jam than the stuff from Big Boi’s debut solo effort. There’s no word on whether or not this is going to be on Big Boi’s newly announced new album Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors. I’m not too crazy about it at the moment. It may be better off as a b-side.
