On May 5, the always reliably wild The Black Lips returned to New York for a performance at Webster Hall. The show came in support of their new album Satan’s graffiti or God’s art?, which was recently released via Vice Records.

Daniel Topete was there to capture the action for us. Check out his shots from The Black Lips set posted in the gallery below, along with their setlist.

By Will Oliver, February 17th 2014

Black Lips - Underneath The Rainbow

Black Lips new album Underneath The Rainbow will be delivered March 18 via Vice.

We already heard first single “Boys In The Wood” (and saw its slightly disturbing music video). Now the Atlanta garage rockers have hit back with another album cut, this time it’s the jangly “Justice After All.”

There’s somewhat of a country influence on the track added to their ever-familiar Black Lips sound. Dig in below.

[new]: Black Lips – Boys In The Wood

Black Lips - Boys In The Wood

Earlier today we reported the Black Lips will release a new album titled Underneath The Rainbow on March 18 via Vice Records. Later today they released the first single from the record, the gritty Americana-garage anthem, “Boys In The Wood.”

It’s a song that revels in its down and dirty growl, working its magic on your, even throwing in some horns at the end of the song. It’s the song that Rolling Stone found out was “an ode to Lynyrd Skynyrd”, and “about the band members growing up in Atlanta and doing bathtub drugs and drinking bathtub gin.”

Can’t wait to hear the rest of the record. Stream “Boys In The Wood” below.

Black Lips @ Music Hall of Williamsburg (November 4, 2013)

The last time I saw Black Lips was at a rowdy SXSW show in Austin that got so out of hand that security actually fought fans, and eventually the band. It was insane to say the least.

Things were toned down quite a bit at Black Lips’ show at Music Hall of Williamsburg last night. The Atlanta boys played a set that included nearly half a dozen new songs. The band said the new album is done, and it should be coming out sometime early next year, probably March (they said). The new songs sounded pretty good for the most part.

The rest of the show featured the usual Black Lips antics, feisty crowd and all. Although their set wasn’t as bonkers energy wise as it was in SXSW, they still put on a rock solid show that had beer cups slinging in the air, and bodies flying across the stage and crowd. They know how to get it done, and I will likely be sure to see them once they’re back in support of the new LP.

They’re playing Bowery Ballroom today (Tues 11/6) as well, if you’re interested in catching them. Fellow Atlanta, Georgia, natives, Subsonics opened before them.

Check out photos from their set below.
