Last week English rock group Fat White Family brought their always intense live show of controlled chaos back to New York for a pair of shows at Baby’s All Right in Brooklyn (May 2), and at Le Poisson Rouge in Manhattan (May 3, where Lady GaGa showed up). Somehow Baby’s All Right is the only place that I’ve ever seen the band (this was my fourth time seeing them) and this show on May 2 was a rowdy good time as always.

[CMJ 2014]: Fat White Family at Baby’s All Right (October 26, 2014)

It was only 11 hours or so that I caught Fat White Family at Baby’s All Right during the day, yet I found myself catching another set from them at nearly 2 a.m.

The daytime set was absolutely insane, with frontman Lias Saoudi crowd-surfing to the ceiling, and halfway masturbating while performing. Yet, all that was somewhat contained to the band’s part 2 effort at Baby’s. With the sun down, all bets were off. The show featured some half naked crowdsurfing from Lias, which eventually led to him stripping his boxers off, and jumping back into the crowd. During all this madness Har Mar Superstar suddenly showed up on stage, in a rather fitting turn of events. It would seem random, but at a show like this, it made way too much sense.

[CMJ 2014]: Fat White Family at Baby’s All Right (October 25, 2014)

I’ve heard many different things, from many different sources about Fat White Family. The British group have quickly made a name for themselves as one of the most polarizing figures to come out of the scene in some time. All I knew about them was that they can get naked at their live shows, and that they had less than kind words to say about Alex Turner. So going into their performance at Baby’s All Right for Brooklynvegan’s free day party, I really had no idea quite what to expect.

They released their album Champagne Holocaust last year, but are still touring it hard, with plans for a new album already next year.

Tickets for the show are still on sale, but we got a pair of tickets to offer to one lucky winner. To enter the contest for a chance to win the pair, leave a comment below with your favorite Fat White Family song.

I’ll contact a winner early tomorrow with instructions on how to get your tickets. Good luck!

If you’re even remotely paying attention to the live music scene in NYC, you’ve probably crossed paths with the wild chaotic live show of Fat White Family. Love them or hate them, their live show leaves a lasting impression.

Rolling Stone’s Sacha Lecca is one of the best in the game and has spent plenty of time with Fat White Family, capturing them live in action and behind the scenes. He’s teamed up with Alec Castillo (of The Nude Party, who toured with Fat White Family) for a split release zine, capturing the up-close and personal moments with the members of Fat White Family, as well as some friends of the band such as Lady Gaga, Sean Lennon and legendary rock superfans, Dennis & Lois.

Best Songs of 2014

By Will Oliver, February 20th 2015 — with 1 comment

Apparently I got Chinese New Year confused with the end of 2014, as it took me until now to finally share my list of favorite songs from 2014. It’s late, but you better bet it’s a true indication of my favorite songs of 2014. These are the 100 songs that I played and enjoyed the most and are still playing on regular rotation. They came from the most established artists like Beck, as well as newcomers such as Alvvays, Leon Bridges and Flyte. It’s a bit all over the map stylistically, which is a good thing if you ask me.

I’ve posted the list of songs below from 100-1. I’ve turned the entire list into a spotify playlist (keep in mind some tracks weren’t on spotify so if that’s the case, just come back here and you can click the song it will take you to the tracks soundcloud/youtube page). Head to the bottom of the page for the spotify playlist, or just head here.

With that said, here are my favorite songs that were released in 2014, finally:

Favorite Live Photos of 2014

By Will Oliver, February 5th 2015

(Foals at Terminal 5)

There was no shortage of great shows to be found in 2014. You can find the best 50 that I saw in 2014 right here. Throughout the year, we took thousands upon thousands of photos, documenting every moment of these unforgettable shows. We put in a lot of work trying to capture the essence of these performances, and I wanted to share these photos with you in one giant collection.

These are not only photos that I took, but also photos taken by our great team of contributing photographers. They’re posted in chronological order, as there was simply no other right way to go about ordering the photos. Below each photo, is the link to the original post, as well as the photographer credit (if it’s other than myself).

So with that said, sit back, and enjoy our favorite live concert photos that we took in 2014. You can also find the gallery posted over at our facebook page. There’s probably one too many photos posted here, but we probably saw way too many shows.

Best Shows Of 2014

By Will Oliver, February 4th 2015 — with 1 comment

I saw more shows than ever before in 2014. The number sits somewhere well over 200, not to mention various festivals and CMJ/SXSW showcases. There was a lot of great music seen, and a lot of great memories shared. We had to say goodbye to Glasslands, Death By Audio, and 285 Kent in one year, which will change the live music landscape in Brooklyn more than we will ever realize.

With so much live music seen, making a list of the best shows is a nearly impossible task. But I sat down, shifted through all my photos, recaps, and foursquare/swarm check ins (very useful in keeping track of shows), and compiled a list of the top 50 shows that I saw last year. Inevitably, a lot of good shows missed the mark, which just reinforces how great those were that did make the cut.

There are a lot of factors that go into this sort of thing. But at the end of the day, these were the shows that made an impression on me throughout the year, the sort of shows that I will want to relive again.

I got a few more posts coming, including some of our favorite live photos taken at these shows, as well as my long overdue best songs and albums. Stay tuned for that. But for now, enjoy my list of the best 50 shows that I saw in 2014.

Recap: CMJ 2014 (Favorite Shows and Photos)

By Will Oliver, November 13th 2014

1_Fat-White_Babys (1)

This year’s CMJ came and went as fast as ever. Going into the fest, I didn’t know what to expect. I ended up leaving pretty surprised about how much great music I saw. (Hell, we even threw our own showcase)

Somewhere in between the various free drinks of alcohol and catch up sessions with friends and fellow music lovers, I found time to catch a bunch of sets of music (almost 40 to be exact). From fresh-faced bands trying to make it, to the more established acts who just happened to be in town for more “official” showcase. From the insanity of Fat White Family’s live show, to the return of Slowdive, there was no shortage of quality music being performed live.

You can find all the show coverage sprinkled through the last few pages of the blog, but here were some of my favorite performance from CMJ 2014, as well as some of my favorite photos that resulted.
