Bent Denim – “All My Friends Are Dead”

By Will Oliver, October 16th 2017

Bent Denim is the project of Dennis Sager and Bennett Littlejohn, a duo from both New Orleans and Nashville who find a way to write and record together despite living hundreds of miles apart from each other.

This year the group returned with their new EP Diamond Jubilee, following their 2015 debut album Romances You. Today we’re here to highlight the EP’s stunning kick-off track “All My Friends Are Dead.” It picks up with a gentle and heartbreaking vocals and a big sounding atmospheric indie rock build that seems to be picking up where the recently departed Youth Lagoon left off. This song finds a way to feel both intimate and huge, with a deep emotional core that feels real and true. If there’s any flaws is that it is too damn short, leaving you wanting even more.

Take a listen to “All My Friends Are Dead” below and grab a free download of the new EP from their bandcamp while it lasts.

1_Blood Orange_The Apollo Theater

On December 12 Dev Hynes’ Blood Orange headlined a special performance at The Apollo Theater as a benefit for the Opus 118 Harlem School of Music. The evening was set to feature his music along with many appearances from special guests. So he billed the show as Blood Orange and Friends, and the show sold out instantly. So fast that a second matinee show was added at 3pm. It was the matinee show that I caught, and as far as matinee performances goes, it was one of the liveliest ones that you’ll ever see.

The show kicked off with brief but fruitful opening performances from New York artists Junglepussy and Ratking. From there it was time for Hynes to shine, but the afternoon was made for collaboration. His set featured not only his songs, but guest appearance and duets from stars such as Nelly Furtado and Solange Knowles. Together with Furtado they performed her hit “Say It Right,” along with a new song of theirs called “Hadron Collider,” that they sold as limited cassette tapes, only available during both shows.

It was a truly a celebration of music not just for Hynes and his friends, but for everyone in the audience, and all for a great cause.

Find some shots of all the performances posted below.

Kodaline – All My Friends (LCD Soundsystem Cover)

By Will Oliver, December 20th 2012

Kodaline’s “All I Want” is one of my favorite songs of 2012. LCD Soundsystem’s “All My Friends” is one of my favorite songs of all-time (and it may very well be #1). So when I saw that Kodaline covered “All My Friends”, I was quite pleased.

It’s not a gashing eruption epic as the original is, but rather a more somber version that captures and rides off the emotional sentiment of the James Murphy classic.

Take a listen below. It’s off their new High Hopes EP, which is due next March 10.

Damn, Palma Violets nail this performance of “Best Of Friends” on Later… with Jools Holland. Has all the energy and attitude that makes the song great. Can’t wait until these lads come stateside. It’s going to be a wild show, that’s for sure.

The band has announced that their debut album is due out in the UK on February 25. Don’t know if that means anything for the U.S. but either way, our ears will be getting a whole album from this exciting band rather soon.

Watch the performance below.

The latest single in the 2012 Adult Swim Single Series comes from Flying Lotus. It’s called “Between Friends” and features Earl Sweatshirt & a character named Captain Murphy.

It definitely captures that feeling you have when you’re watching Adult Swim late at night. Earl Sweatshirt & Mr. Murphy fit the song like a glove.

Brooklyn up-and-comers Friends have finally announced the details of their debut album. It’s titled Manifest! and will be released via Fat Possum on June 5.

After releasing two stunning singles last year (“I’m His Girl” and “Friend Crush”), the band is finally going to give us an album worth of dance worthy jams. The album features 12 tracks recorded at Strange Weather studios between last summer/this spring. The band self produced it.

The first taste of the album is the awesome “Mind Control”. It’s a funky song that features elements of disco and dance that really radiates with a New York City nightlife sound.

They are playing Bowery Ballroom on July 7. Hope to see you there.

[Band To Watch]: Friends

By Will Oliver, October 31st 2011

Brooklyn-based band Friends have caught my attention with their new single “I’m His Girl”. It’s a bit of indie funk, with an attitude. Friends give you that and more on the single which is infectious to the bone. It’s the type of music that won’t leave your head. Next thing you know, everyone will be asking you what exactly your bumping, and you can proudly tell them it’s Friends. This band just gives off this feeling of “cool” that makes it easy to see why they are so likeable.

The “I’m His Girl” 7″ single is released tomorrow, but you can stream it below (Stream b-side “My Boo” over at the bands site:

The Beets – Friends Of Friends

By Will Oliver, October 15th 2011

We already heard “Doing As I Do” from The Beets upcoming LP, Let The Poison Out. “Friends Of Friends” is the latest track to be shared.

It may only be a minute and a half long, but it makes use of every second. Packing in sweet hooks over jangly guitar riffs resulting in a happy song that surely deserves another spin.

Surely you have the time.
