Kate Tempest – “Tunnel Vision” (Music Video)

By Will Oliver, December 28th 2017

British poet/rapper/author Kate Tempest moves to the beat of her own drum, doing something that can be considered hip-hop or spoken word but her voice cuts deeper than that. Her 2016 album Let Them Eat Chaos was another thoughtful release from the artist who continues to prove herself to be one of the smartest voices in the game at the moment. She blew me away when she came through to Le Poisson Rouge back in April.

It’s hard not to be moved by her music video for “Tunnel Vision.” with some political statements that are all too relevant in this climate. It’s good to know that we have voices like Tempest to help guide us through these troubling times.

Kate Tempest at Governors Ball 2015

English rapper, poet, and spoken word artist Kate Tempest kicked off Day 2 of Governors Ball with an inspirational set that got the day started right. Although it was barely even 1 p.m., she came out with the blaze and fire of a high energy set in the heart of night.

She shared tracks and insight from her 2014 album Everybody Down (released via Big Dada), which got plenty of positive reviews last year. Our very own Rachel covered Tempest’s performance at Rough Trade just this March and was left very impressed by what she saw, so it was nice to go and check out Tempest live for myself. I too, left impressed.

She’s a talent, one that needs a lot more exposure than she’s currently getting here in the states.

Find some photos from her set posted below.

UK spoken word/rapper/poet extraordinaire, Kate Tempest joined us in Brooklyn Wednesday night at Rough Trade NYC. She walked on to stage looking completely nonchalant, like any other person you would see walking down the street and not take a second glance at. In fact, I saw her standing in the audience prior to her performance and didn’t realize at first that was her. Later she mhe made that fact known as she spoke out numbers from her 2014 debut album Everybody Down.

Recap: Governors Ball 2015

By Will Oliver, August 17th 2015 — with 1 comment

(Taken by Anthony Bauer)

There was plenty to love at Governors Ball 2015 this past June, featuring triumphant performances from headliners such as My Morning Jacket and Ryan Adams, to unforgettable performances from big groups like Hot Chip, St. Vincent and Weird Al, to up and comers like Royal Blood and The Districts, as well as the always unforgettable Future Islands. There was certainly something for everyone.

Since I strung together individual posts of photo sets and recaps, here’s a handy recap giving you everything all in one place. I’ve included a running list of all the recaps/photo sets in order of each day and set times, as well as my top 10 favorite sets of the festival. This year we also got a featured post from our very own Anthony Bauer, who offered a recap of the happenings from his perspective. Find all that good stuff posted below, along with some of our favorite photos taken from the weekend.

Governors Ball 2015 – A Different Perspective

By Anthony Bauer, August 11th 2015 — with 1 comment

The Governors Ball Music Festival has taken place in New York City every year since 2011, and every year since I’ve thought about going but never committed to actually going. It’s never been due to the lineup, but mostly because I’ve ended up being busy whenever the festival is in town. All of that changed this year though as I found out that I had the opportunity to go and without any hesitation, I immediately said absolutely.

I was thrilled as the lineup this year was amazing, but at the same time very stressful (I’ll explain in a minute). The lineup featured almost everything I’d want to see, all in one easy to navigate location. The stressful part about the lineup is the stressful part with most any festival lineups – you have to compromise at one point. The real struggle is when you’re watching one band but you want to check out another band that is playing across the field. Or, you want to get a good spot for another band at a different stage so you keep asking yourself, “do I leave, or do I stay?” It’s an absolute horrible feeling having to leave one band to get a good spot for another band, but all in all, thats what festivals are all about – making compromises. They’re necessary compromises in order to see everybody you wouldn’t normally get to see all in one place. Read the rest of this entry »

Preview: Governors Ball 2015

By Will Oliver, June 5th 2015

Gov Ball

Today, Governors Ball returns to New York City to take over Randall’s Island Park for another edition of the annual festival. It’s hard to believe that it’s June, let alone time for another edition of NYC’s beloved festival.

By now, you should (probably) have a good idea of who you’ll be seeing tomorrow, as well as the rest of the weekend. But if not, I’ve compiled a list of artists who I plan to catch throughout the weekend, if that will help sway your decision.
