Khruangbin at Music Hall of Williamsburg (April 13, 2018)

By Will Oliver, May 14th 2018 — with 1 comment

Houston-based trio Khruangbin creates atmospheric Thai funk/surf-soul that is very much in a world of its own. In February they returned with new album Con Todo El Mundo, released via Dead Oceans.

Their tour in support of the great new record brought them to Brooklyn for not one but two sold out shows at Music Hall of Williamsburg. I caught night one of the two-night run on April 13, which featured a remarkable opening performance by jazz-inspired duo The Mattson 2 (find Bauer’s photos from their set here). They were a rather perfect compliment to the sounds of Khruangbin, spiritual cousins if you will.

Meghan Remy has continued to evolve her band U.S. Girls into something new and different with every new release and her latest album In a Poem Unlimited (released via 4AD) may just be her strongest work to date. Collaborating with Toronto jazz/funk collective Cosmic Range, she goes full-on indie dance rock with that enough of a weird edge of it that provides that familiar spark.

The reception to the new album has been justifiably very strong with fans dying to catch this current version of her live show. When her scheduled show at Baby’s All Right on April 13 sold out quickly, they added not one, but two shows at the venue that night, with one coming in earlier in the night, one at a normal time, and another just past midnight. After catching Khruangbin over at Music Hall of Williamsburg, I made my way to Baby’s to catch their third and final performance of the evening.

The Mattson 2 at Music Hall of Williamsburg (April 13, 2018)

By Anthony Bauer, May 14th 2018 — with 1 comment

The Mattson 2 have been unstoppable this past year touring in support of one of 2017’s finest albums, Star Stuff (the collaborative album with Chaz Bundick, aka Chaz Bear, aka Toro y Moi). We we there for their Bowery Ballroom, LPR and Baby’s All Right show, so when we found out they were coming back to New York City, we knew where we were going to be on April 13th. The twin brother duo was opening the night up for Khruangbin, the 3-piece Thai-funk infused band that hails from Texas.

Best Songs of 2017: Anthony’s Picks

By Anthony Bauer, January 11th 2018

This ‘top 100 songs of 2017’ post could have easily been ‘top 200 songs of 2017’ due to the insane (yet absolutely amazing) amount of great music that was released this past year.  While it is near impossible to listen to it all, here were my favorite 100 songs from 2017 (with a bonus 5, because… why not?):

Tycho at Brooklyn Steel [night 2] (May 4, 2017)

By Anthony Bauer, May 16th 2017

It may be hard to believe but, the last time we saw Tycho in New York City was three years ago back in the fall of 2014. We were there for his stellar set at Terminal 5 and were beyond thrilled to hear he was returning to NYC for not one, but a two-night run at the newly opened Brooklyn Steel.

The mastermind behind Tycho, Scott Hansen, is out on the road with his band in support of his absolutely fantastic new album Epoch which was released digitally early last year and physically this year via Ghostly International.  Along for the ride and kicking things off for the night, was Thai-surf infused funk trio, Khruangbin.

Khruangbin

The first time I heard of Khruangbin was back in 2013, on Bonobo’s Late Night Tales curated album mix and was immediately hooked. When I saw they were opening for Tycho, I knew the night would be something special. The three-piece’s chilled out vibes groves along on a relaxed pace that never feels rushed, and was a perfect match for opening up the show. Standout tracks from their set included, “A Calf Born in Winter,” “Dern Kala,” and “People Everywhere (Still Alive).” The last full length album the band put out was released in 2015 but we can’t wait to see them return to New York City and can’t wait to see what’s next for the band.
