Kodaline @ Mercury Lounge (January 31, 2013)

By Will Oliver, February 1st 2013

Loads of young Irish gentlemen were rowdy and full of support of their fellow Irish comrades, and personal friends, Kodaline last night at Mercury Lounge. Being relatively new to the scene – and the U.S. – (it was their 1st NYC show, and 2nd U.S. show), it was a big moment for them. Bands always need to start somewhere, and I think last night’s performance was a small step towards the success that Kodaline will soon experience.

Although they have only released an EP, and built a string of critical success (Included on BBC’s Sound of 2013), there was a modest sense of excitement for the young band. I was drawn towards the band after their incredible “All I Know” swept me clean of my feet last fall. I wasn’t the only one.

For those that just familiar with “All I Know”, don’t be too quick to lump the 4-piece into that soaring anthematic rock category. The band toys with a wide variety of sounds that can reach anywhere from somber and introspective, to soaring and upbeat. Singer Stephen Garrigan leads the pack, and has a voice that will immediately draw awe.

Although it was a brief set, it was an impressive one from start to finish. The band already sound fully formed and ready to take on much bigger stages. I know that’s soon to come, these guys are just built to someday grace the masses. I’d be shocked if Kodaline don’t become a trademark name over the next few years, headlining festivals and gravitating the radio-waves. They could rival the likes of Mumford and Sons and I think we’d all be much better for it.

Michael Bernard Fitzgerald opened and gave an impressive display of soul-inspired folk tunes. I ended up being very surprised by how much he won me over.

Hit the jump to see photos from both Kodaline and Michael, and videos of Kodaline performing “All I Want” & Michael playing a song called “Follow”.

Kodaline – All My Friends (LCD Soundsystem Cover)

By Will Oliver, December 20th 2012

Kodaline’s “All I Want” is one of my favorite songs of 2012. LCD Soundsystem’s “All My Friends” is one of my favorite songs of all-time (and it may very well be #1). So when I saw that Kodaline covered “All My Friends”, I was quite pleased.

It’s not a gashing eruption epic as the original is, but rather a more somber version that captures and rides off the emotional sentiment of the James Murphy classic.

Take a listen below. It’s off their new High Hopes EP, which is due next March 10.

Kodaline – All I Want

By Will Oliver, August 28th 2012

Dublin four-piece Kodaline have released a music video for their stunning “All I Want”. The video is an emotional one, just like the song. It may pull a few heartstrings, causing you to root for the protagonist. I usually don’t get too pulled into music videos, but this one really did the job.

This song is the authentic stuff that is above and beyond the stuff Mumford & Sons have millions foolishly drunk off. No no no, folks. Kodaline is the real deal.

The song is taken from their debut self-titled EP which drops September 9 via RCA Victor/B-Unique. The entire EP is available to stream below. Grab a free download of “Play” (from the EP), right here.

Lollapalooza Anounces 2014 Lineup

By Will Oliver, March 27th 2014

The 2014 Lollapalooza lineup was announced yesterday, and it seems to be garnering some mixed reactions. Headlining the fest are Outkast (duh), Eminem, Kings Of Leon, Arctic Monkeys, Skrillex, Calvin Harris, Lorde, The Avett Brothers and Foster The People. I can understand the disappointment. While it’s (of course) great to see Arctic Monkeys there, the rest of the list is pretty subpar.

From there, here are some artists listed that caught my eye: Interpol, Cut Copy, Portugal. The Man, Nas, Childish Gambino, Broken Bells, Spoon, Young The Giant, Lykke Li, Chance The Rapper, Phantogram, Grouplove, CHVRCHES, Chromeo, Darkside, The 1975, Jenny Lewis, Phosphorescent, The Temper Trap, Bombay Bicycle Club, White Denim, Typhoon, Warpaint, Kate Nash, Kodaline, Lucius, Blood Orange, Jagwar Ma, Parquet Courts, Temples, NoNoNo, Papa, The Districts, Ratking, The So So Glos,

While the headliners aren’t all that spectacular, the other acts playing the festival are solid. So basically the day section of Lollapalooza may be where the real action is.

Check out the full lineup with the photo above, or check out a day by day breakdown below.

We All Want Someone To Shout For’s Best Songs Of 2013…So Far

By Will Oliver, July 8th 2013 — with 17 comments

It’s time. I present to you: The best songs of the year…so far. It’s a little past the halfway point of 2013, but I felt it was best to let some releases digest to provide the most accurate list possible. As always, I use the title “best” loosely, as these are really just my favorite songs so far. A lot can change from now to December. New songs will arrive, songs will grow on me, some will rise on the ranks, some may drop, or drop out. It’s cool to see what I thought was the cream of the crop in June, and what ends up finishing as my favorite 3-5 minutes of ear candy of the entire year.

If you’ve been too busy to be our friend this year, or just in desperate need of some new tunes: This is for you. There’s 50 songs, something for everyone. Let me know what you think of the list in the comment section. If you hated it, if you loved it. Tell me what I missed.

I can’t give you guys those free downloads anymore (it won’t fly at this stage), but I can provide you with a lovely spotify link where you can listen to the entire playlist from top to bottom. Or you can just check out the list below, where I’ve included either soundcloud or youtube links.

With that said, enjoy some of my favorite songs of 2013, so far:

We All Want Someone To Shout For’s Best Songs Of 2012

By Will Oliver, January 4th 2013 — with 6 comments

Yesterday I blessed you with my favorite albums from 2012, and now, here are my favorite songs from 2012. It’s always tough to narrow songs down to a list, even if the list is 100 songs long. A lot of great new music comes out at a rapid-fire basis these days, from the biggest artists, to the smallest.

When it came down to it, these were the songs that kept the best company of the last 12 months.

As always thanks to Camilo for the artwork. You can stream the songs themselves, or listen to one giant spotify stream right here.

I present to you:
