By Will Oliver, June 9th 2014

Lana Del Rey - Ultraviolence

Lana Del Rey will release her new album Ultraviolence on June 17 via Interscope. We already heard two singles from the album: “West Coast” and “Shades Of Cool.”

Last week she released the wide-spanning title track “Ultaviolence” that is straight up dazzling. It’s got that now signature Del Rey sound that you’ve grown to either love or hate by now. If its love, this one will be right up your ally.

Stream it below.

[new]: Lana Del Rey – Shades Of Cool

By Will Oliver, May 27th 2014

Lana Del Rey - Shades Of Cool

Lana Del Rey surprised me with her first Ultraviolence single “West Coast”, which I found to be a a very pleasant delight.

Since that, she’s released a video for it and this weekend she performed at Kanye’s wedding. The next day she released “Shades Of Cool”, another track off of Ultraviolence.

“Shades Of Cool” is an elegant affair that is drenched in a foggy atmosphere that sounds ready to soundtrack a big Hollywood picture – maybe the next James Bond.

Check it out below, along with the live debut of the title track, which she debuted in Vancouver

[music video]: Lana Del Rey – West Coast

Lana Del Rey - West Coast

Lana Del Rey’s
Ultraviolence single “West Coast” was released last month and has my stamp of approval. The looping first video we got for it was more of a tease/prequel for the real one, which was recently released.

The official video is as cinematic as you’d expect from Del Rey. It’s shot in black and white, until the end of the video when she is suddenly surrounded by flames.

Check out the video, which is posted below.

Lana Del Rey – West Coast

Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey released her new single “West Coast” earlier in the month, but I wasn’t ready to dive in back then. I needed some time, for whatever reason.

Maybe because these days it seems like people just hate Del Rey simply because others do, and their twitter accounts would loose some of their cool if they said anything otherwise. It just doesn’t make sense to me consider a majority of these same people adore Kanye, Lorde, Sky Ferreira, Justin Timberlake, etc. You get the point. I get that she isn’t for everyone. However, judge her based on the music, and leave the rest for the birds. It gets too exhausting to think about. Read the rest of this entry »

[new]: Lana Del Rey – Young and Beautiful (From The Great Gatsby Soundtrack)

By Will Oliver, April 22nd 2013 — with 3 comments

You’ve already made up your mind on Lana Del Rey, so if you’re reading this, you’re either a fan, or just curious enough to add fuel to your fire. It’s fitting that she’s a part of the soundtrack for the upcoming film adaptation of the treasured novel The Great Gatsby. Opinion’s on how the film will turn out seem to be severely polarizing, which usually doesn’t bode too well for a film’s fate. But I am still looking forward to see how it all unfolds, we certainly know that director Baz Luhrmann will deliver something that will be discussed one way or another, that’s for sure.

Last week we saw Florence + The Machine’s contribution to the film’s soundtrack. Now we have Lana Del Rey’s, a song called “Young and Beautiful” which she worked on with Luhrmann. It’s definitely got a big-time sound, floating above cinematic clouds of smoke.

Lana Del Rey – Bel Air

By Will Oliver, November 8th 2012

Yesterday Lana Del Rey uploaded a video of new song “Bel Air” which is a part of her Born To Die special edition re-issue. The song continues Lana’s journey towards what seems to be a more atmospheric turn. There’s a haunted whisper like quality to her music that actually sound Sufjan Stevens-like at times.

The film comes paired with the following in the youtube description:

-i lost my reputation, i forgot my truth. But i have my beauty and i have my youth.
‘TROPICO’ the film, coming next year

So we can probably expect another epic video like “Ride” from her. Not against that, as I enjoyed that a lot.

Watch/listen to “Bel Air” below.

[music video]: Lana Del Rey – Ride

By Will Oliver, October 12th 2012 — with 1 comment

Lana Del Rey is releasing an extended edition of her debut album, Born To Die. It’s called The Paradise Edition, and features 8 new songs including “Blue Velvet” and her new single “Ride”. She just released a epic 10-minute-video with it’s own narrative and everything.

I would pretty much label this one a short film. It’s a thing of beauty, elegantly shot by director Anthony Mandler. It’s a wonderful video. Watch it below.
