Mac DeMarco at Bowery Ballroom (September 23, 2017)

By Will Oliver, November 14th 2017 — with 1 comment

The same night that Mac DeMarco played to a sold out crowd at Radio City Music Hall – his largest show here to date – he announced that he’d play a much smaller show the very next day back at Bowery Ballroom (where we saw him play just two years ago).

I wasn’t able to attend the show at Radio City but this was a much better option as Mac is really meant to be seen in a room such as Bowery where he can literally use it as his personal playground. The show had a good energy from the very start, with the crowd moving around non-stop and belting back every word.

Mac DeMarco at Webster Hall (May 15, 2016)

By Will Oliver, September 8th 2016

The unstoppable and lovable Mac DeMarco just connects with young music fans unlike any artist out there (maybe other than Kanye, of course). He thrives off the 16+ crowd, the sort of audience that eat up his cigarette-smoking goofball attitude, the type that will line up for hours beforehand, and try to run onto the stage to take a selfie with him. Luckily for them, Mac is kind enough to kindly reject the selfies, instead of giving them a rough boot, as most artists would, especially with the last name Gallagher or Corgan.

Following a great performance at Bowery Ballroom just two days earlier, I went for “another one” with Mac DeMarco, this time at a very sold out Music Hall of Williamsburg. It was another unforgettable encounter with the goofball king of indie rock, which didn’t end with a jump from the balcony, but rather an epic crowdsurf, all with one hand down his pants. Only Mac.

Find some photos from his performance posted below.

Mac DeMarco at Bowery Ballroom (August 17, 2015)

On August 17 Mac DeMarco kicked off the first of a four night run in support of his mini-album Another One. He ended things in epic fashion, climbing to the far right balcony, and kissing his girlfriend Kira, before jumping off into the crowd. It was one of the most memorable live moments for me, in a year filled with them.

Mac DeMarco at Baby’s All Right (August 4, 2015)

By Will Oliver, November 28th 2015

1_Mac DeMarco_Babys All Right

In the early days of August if you checked the Baby’s All Right calendar you’d notice there was a mysterious artist by the name of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets playing a show on August 4. Only this clearly this band didn’t exist, and neither did the opener Another Juan. But the mysterious photo of Alfred E. Neuman, the famed Mad Magazine mascot, dressed as Harry. You then realized that there was a slight resemblance to Mac DeMarco, all the way down to the gap teeth. Then you realize that Another Juan is not only a clue for an opening set from Mac’s buddy Juan Wauters, but also a nod to Mac’s new “mini-album” Another One. The secret performance wasn’t much of a secret day of, as word had spread to those paying close enough attention, and it came for a bargain at only $5.

The performance featured many of the live debuts of tracks from the delightful Another One, which was perfect listening for the tail end of the summer months. He eased the introduction of the new songs by spacing them with old favorites such as “Salad Days,” “The Stars Keep On Calling My Name,” “Cooking up Something Good,” and of course, “Still Together,” which featured a show-ending crowd-surfer from Mac, from the front of Baby’s, all the way to the back, and then back.

Find some more photos from his performance at Baby’s posted below.

Preview: Mac DeMarco’s 4-Show Run This Week

By Will Oliver, August 17th 2015

Mac DeMarco

Mac Demarco has emerged as not only one of the hottest artists currently in the music scene, but also as a local live favorite in New York. DeMarco, who now resides in Rockaway, Queens, will celebrate the recent release of his new mini-LP Another One (out via Captured Tracks) with a string of four very sold out shows this week (he also played a surprise show at Baby’s All Right a couple weeks ago).

The first show comes tonight at Bowery Ballroom. Tomorrow night he’ll take over Webster Hall, Wednesday will be Music Hall of Williamsburg, and he will round it out with a final performance at Warsaw, if he has any energy left. Tickets for all shows are sold out, but there are still some floating around secondary markets, although they’re insanely pricey. If you wanted to go to all four shows, you had a chance to by showing up to the BBQ Mac threw at 153 Morgan Ave on July 8, where he was selling “All Passes” that would get you into all the shows, along with a special t-shit and a surprise item.

We will have coverage coming from at least one of the shows happening this week, stay tuned for more on that. All shows are bound to be good ones. If you can find a way out, make it happen. God bless.

Mac DeMarco – “The Way You’d Love Her”

By Will Oliver, May 13th 2015

Mac DeMarco

The always hard working Mac DeMarco will release his new mini-LP Another One on August 7 via Captured Tracks.

He recently let go of opening track “The Way You’d Love Her,” a track that wastes no time establishing itself into his world which is becoming a genre of its own. It features some trippy guitar effects, with a very Mac solo to boot. It’s a groovy cut, that certainly stays true to the albums promise to have a “bittersweet, romantic sensibility.”

Mac has never let us down, doesn’t look like he plans to start now.

Mac DeMarco - Another One

Mac DeMarco has had quite a year. With the release of the highly acclaimed Salad Days last year, his popularity surged and seems to have no limit. He’s got no plans to slow down, but instead has announced a brand new mini album called Another One, and will be released on August 7 via Captured Tracks. That’s the album art posted above. The announcement comes almost a year to the day that Salad Days was announced.

The eight-track mini-LP was recorded entirely by himself at his home in Queens somewhere in between his hectic touring schedule. It’s being described as having a “bittersweet, romantic sensibility, haunting and warm” with an overall feeling of “lost love, or perhaps love never found.”

Mac DeMarco at Terminal 5 (November 4, 2014)

By Will Oliver, December 2nd 2014

1_Mac DeMarco_Terminal 5

In early November (the 4th, to be exact), the man himself, Mac DeMarco, took over Terminal 5. That’s right, the silliest man in indie rock and roll not only played the large-scale Manhattan venue, but he sold it out. It was an impressive feat, but no surprise when you look at Mac’s incredible rise over the past few months with the release of his fantastic LP Salad Days. The stacked lineup also included opening sets from Connan Mockasin and King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard

Mac DeMarco at 4Knots Music Festival 2014

By Will Oliver, July 15th 2014

1_Mac DeMarco

Whenever young girls start showing up to your shows screaming for you, you’ve made it. This was the case at Mac DeMarco’s 4Knots performance this Saturday. Even as he was just setting up his gear, chilling with a smoke in hand, girls started screaming his name. DeMarco must be starting to see this sort of thing more now, but you can tell it’s still something he’s getting used to.

There’s no doubt that DeMarco is becoming a star, and how can you be made, the guy deserves it. Not only does he make songs that both rock out and please the romantics, but he puts on a fun show. Him and his band deliver a youthful energy that connects with fans, and it always helps when you can rely on Mac for a trip into the crowd by the end of the show. Salad Days remains one of the year’s best, and getting to hear its tracks played live amongst the highlights of 2 always makes for an enchanting evening.

With a newly announced show at Terminal 5 this November, it looks as though the intimate shows are now a thing of the past. Hey, that’s the price of being a rock star.
