Swim Deep @ Mercury Lounge (March 19, 2013)

By Will Oliver, March 23rd 2013

Swim Deep made their NYC debut during an opening gig at Mercury Lounge this tuesday. The boys who are making huge waves over in their native land of the U.K. are little known here minus anglophiles and bloggers. The band are extremely young but are more than capable of re-creating their work live. Their songs bristled with youthful excitement live, a bright experience for all lucky enough to see them in such a small setting.

“Honey” and “King City”, the bands big singles, and rightfully so. They were the clear standouts out of the set and prove that the band have potential to write songs that sound massive.

Swim Deep

Swim Deep did well in 2012, releasing “King City” one of my favorite songs of the year. They also released “Honey”, which just barely missed inclusion.

They are keeping their momentum going by releasing yet another new single titled “The Sea.” I can hear the band progressing forward. They’re slowly coming into their own.

“The Sea” is a bright tune with eager-minded vocals and instrumentals that call for warmer days in the sun with your friends. Radiating with cool, Swim Deep are creating quite a name for themselves.

[new]: Swim Deep – Honey

By Will Oliver, October 5th 2012

Swim Deep have signed to London label Chess Club Records and have released a video for a new song called “Honey” in celebration.

They delivered one of 2012’s best singles so far with “King City”. “Honey” is a follow up that is just as worthy of recognition. One listen and I promise you will be hooked. It’s one of those tracks that is so good, it instantly feels familiar and timeless. You won’t even know when or where it happened, but I promise, you will know “Honey”.

Swim Deep, along with fellow Birmingham fellows Peace, are starting a musical revolution over there. They may be young, but they’re already chugging out some high quality tunes that any fans of rock should be invested in.

Watch the video below. It’s a good one. Try not to fall in love with the gorgeous Holly Bickerton. You can also pre-order the single here.

Swim Deep – King City

Big ups to Pigeons & Planes for introducing me to Swim Deep. They posted their song “King City” in their list of the best songs of 2012, so far.

Swim Deep are a bunch of lads from Birmingham, England who have penned “King City” what is likely to be on of the best debut singles you will hear all year, as P&P pointed out. The band years for Warpaint bassist Jerry Lee Lindberg as they rock out, clinging on to all the desires that make up our youthful minds. It’s brisk, catchy, and leaves you feeling care free. It makes you want to take a nice weekend out to the beach with your friends, leaving everything else behind. In this world, you’re the king.

The 7″ single is backed with b-side “Beach Justice”, and can be ordered from rough trade, or bought on iTunes.

We All Want Someone To Shout For’s Best Songs Of 2012

Yesterday I blessed you with my favorite albums from 2012, and now, here are my favorite songs from 2012. It’s always tough to narrow songs down to a list, even if the list is 100 songs long. A lot of great new music comes out at a rapid-fire basis these days, from the biggest artists, to the smallest.

When it came down to it, these were the songs that kept the best company of the last 12 months.

As always thanks to Camilo for the artwork. You can stream the songs themselves, or listen to one giant spotify stream right here.

I present to you:

We All Want Someone To Shout For’s Best Songs Of 2012…So Far

By Will Oliver, August 22nd 2012 — with 6 comments

Shit, it’s the middle of August already? Did I really wait this long to make my best songs of the middle of the year list? Yep, Will Oliver at his finest hour.

Ah whatever. No matter how late this list is, I still fell obliged to share what I found to be the best songs of 2012 at the middle (or 3/4) point of 2012. This year saw a lot of great stuff from a lot of my favorite bands, as well as a lot of young, new, talent. I am so impressed by this group of songs, that I couldn’t even keep to my limit of 50 like I originally planned. Remember, this is just my preliminary list. Things can and will change come December.

I got mp3 downloads of some songs, and links of streams to others on each individual track. I also got a spotify playlist where you can actually stream the entire thing. Find that here. Not a bad deal.

Thanks to my good friend Riley for allowing me to use her awesome photo, which Camilo edited to allow the addition of some text.

So take a break from your work, stream the playlist from your phone while your at the beach, and allow me to soundtrack your move in to your college dorm. Here are my favorite songs of 2012, as of right now:
