[new]: The Hives – Go Right Ahead

By Will Oliver, March 12th 2012 — with 1 comment

The Hives have not released a new album in 5 years. I know, right? Well those pesky Swedish guitar rockers are back with a brand new song called “Go Right Ahead”. It’s the lead single on their new album Lex Hives, which is coming out June 5th via the band’s own label, Disques Hives.

Rolling Stone premiered the song, and it’s available to stream below. It’s big guitars, bigger hooks, and all the energy in the world. It’s a stereotypical The Hives type of song, and our days have been made better by it. It may not be 2000, but it’s still very much The Hives time.

The Hives & Cyndi Lauper – A Christmas Duel

By Will Oliver, December 15th 2009 — with 2 comments

My new blogger friends Streets Of Your Town showed me an old Hives song from last year (which I thought was from this year at first!) that is fairly enjoyable. The song, “A Christmas Duel” is a collaboration with Cyndi Lauper that the Hives gave away for free on their site from last year!

This is a bizarre Chrismas song, thats for sure. It’s more of a rock song with Christmas themed lyrics. It is far from being a traditional x-mas song!

Check out “A Christmas Duel”:

Band To Watch: The Federals

By Will Oliver, February 8th 2010 — with 6 comments

I have not experienced the feelings of truly being wowed by a band for a while. It’s nearly 5 AM but I have not gone to bed because I have spent the last hour digging up all the information that I can on The Federals. They are one of the best young bands that I have heard so far this year, and I am blown away. I noticed them thanks to Tim from The Blue Walrus. They are the British band that the NME should be pushing. These guys are miles better than most of the rubbish that publication seems to be pushing these days anyway.

The band hails from York and met while attending York’s Millthorpe Secondary School not too many years ago. They shared a love for bands like The Stooges, The White Stripes, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Then, The Federals were born. They have released two EP’s so far, and are working on their debut album for a hopeful release later this year.Their songs feature an assault of guitars, singing from a Jack White raspy blues voice, and tight drumming. I can only imagine a club featuring The Federals and how nuts the crowd would go for them, moshing, screaming, pushing, and shoving. These guys are really exciting to listen to. Something about them is genuine and fresh. They are making real garage rock and roll come to life. With so much bullshit indie music out there, it is really refreshing to see a band go back to the roots and just rock the fuck out.

They are giving away their latest EP, Transistor, for free right here. All you gotta do is give them your email. Trust me, it is worth it. All three songs are strong garage stompers with an attitude. If you like garage rock done right, you can’t go wrong with this EP. “Transistor 1969″ is the standout song, with plenty of attitude “Automatic Breakdown” is a tight song with slick riffs from every guitar and bass. Throw in some harmonica and you got a winner. “What’s Goin’ Around” reminded me of The Hives, which is a pretty good compliment!

I am completely sold on The Federals. They are one of my new favorite bands right now. I hope they get the attention of the big boys, because they certainly deserve it. I posted the 3 songs from their EP below, because I couldn’t pick just one:
