The Joy Formidable at Le Poisson Rouge (March 1, 2017)

By Ross Bernhardt, March 16th 2017

Words and photos by Ross Bernhardt

The last time I covered The Joy Formidable for the site, on April 14th, 2016, the show was decidedly different from the one I witnessed on at Le Poisson Rouge on March 1. During that tour, they had alt-rockers Everything Everything opening and displayed their usual rock prowess at Irving Plaza. This tour went in a different, softer direction. Instead of the loud, winding jams most fans have come to know, the trio from Wales did an entirely acoustic tour.

The Joy Formidable and Everything Everything at Irving Plaza (April 14, 2016)

Ritzy 1

Plain and simple, The Joy Formidable are one of the best live bands out there right now. Ritzy Bryan, Rhydian Dafydd Davies and Matt Thomas have honed and perfected their blistering live set over the years into something that anyone can enjoy. There’s so much ferocity, intensity and fun that their band name really comes to life. They make joy look incredibly formidable, but in an inviting and engaging way. Read the rest of this entry »

By Will Oliver, December 18th 2010 — with 2 comments

Finally checked out The Joy Formidable. My first taste of them came from their music video for “Whirring”. I think these guys are onto something pretty special. I’m impressed.

“Whirring” is taken from their debut album, The Big Roar, which is coming out on March 15th.

Sleigh Bells at Le Poisson Rouge (September 8)

In 2016 we opened our doors and expanded our small team to include more contributing photographers than ever before. As a result, we have a lot of content that we are proud of, and wanted to take a look back at some of our favorite live music photographs taken throughout 2016. Thanks to our entire team for all of their incredible efforts. There’s so much great music happening year round, it’s truly amazing how much of it we were able to be a part of in some way, no matter how small.

So with that, here’s an absolute giant gallery of our favorite photos of 2016 taken in chronologic order:

[The Strokes]

After a great first day of of the inaugural Landmark Music Festival, there was a different feeling in the air with a rare performance from The Strokes looming. It helped that the rest of the day featured a great lineup that included CHVRCHES, Alt-J, Dan Deacon, The Joy Formidable, Lord Huron and Houndmouth. It was a great day of music, and a great finish to what was ultimately a very successful first year for the new festival. I can’t wait to see what they have up their sleeves for next fall.

Find photo galleries of all the sets I caught on day 2 below, in order of appearance.
