The xx – Sunset (Jamie xx Edit)

By Will Oliver, July 11th 2013 — with 1 comment

Who better to remix The xx than Jamie xx himself. He gives his personal edit of the song that’s more along the lines of what you would get at their live shows. More bass driven and a little dancier. I like this version of the song quite a bit.

The xx @ Governors Ball (June 9, 2013)

If you had any doubts that The xx are here to stay, here I am to confirm that. They played to a massive audience as the sub-headliner on Sunday, packing their section of Randall’s Island with ease. I’ve seen them a few times now, and every single time has been an improvement over the last.

They may not have the most expansive sound but they make it work live with powerful vocal work. But the unsung hero is Jamie XX, who holds down the fort like an anchor creating a massive swell of a sound in the back. He’s the thread that links all the pieces together.

The xx are only going to continue to improve live over time. Don’t be surprised when they sell out Radio City this September.

In addition to Lana Del Rey and Florence + The Machine, we now get to hear The xx’s new song contribution to the soundtrack for The Great Gatsby. It has some slick production and features a sleepy mood setting vibe, with cinematic strings and all. They pulled out all the stops for this one. We can expect to hear this during an important scene during the film’s climax, one would think.

Take a listen below.

As a Valentine’s day gift, The xx covered Beyonce’s “I Miss You”. The shared the track on their blog, telling fans:

Whilst on tour in Texas, we decided to cover a song by a Texan. She is one of our favourite artists of all time, Beyonce. This song has always meant a lot to us and was written with another artist we really admire, Frank Ocean. Happy Valentines day to you all. Lots of love, xx The xx

They do an incredible job with the cover, making it their own. They could have had me fooled thinking it was their own.

Watch/listen to the cover below.

The xx @ Paradise Theater (October 27, 2012)

By Will Oliver, October 27th 2012 — with 1 comment

It’s been a solid two and a half years since the last time I saw the xx. It definitely showed, as this was not even close to the same band that I saw at Webster Hall.

This was a stronger, much different version of the band. Their rise to insane popularity is no secret, but even so, I didn’t anticipate just how different they would be live. There was a much bolder focus on Jamie xx and his beat making capability. The live experience is a bit different than their recorded work in this aspect. But Jamie xx is only one part of the exciting whole that is the xx, and this is only one part of the bands range.

Of course, the rest goes to the extremely talented vocal duo of Oliver Sim and Romy Madley-Croft. They are moments when they hide in the shadows, letting the silhouettes that light up during brief flashes of light. Their voices rise beneath the surface and are the glue that holds the act together. The band are certainly looking and sounding a lot more comfortable than they did in their early days.

They would weave in and out of songs, merging them together, making them into whole pieces, usually through electronic work that definitely holds well live. This created a set that was like a connected thread, creating an entire piece, rather than a series of songs.

Songs from both album were shared equally, with the newer songs showing new temperament, and the older songs stretching their limbs into new territories as well.
