YACHT at Bowery Ballroom (January 16, 2018)

By Collin Quinlivan, February 12th 2018

As I sat at the bar waiting for doors, I had a conversation with a girl sitting next to me. It was her first time seeing YACHT live, and she was very excited. I explained that she was in for a quite a show and would not be disappointed. We were not.

I first caught wind of YACHT in 2011 after hearing “Dystopia (The Earth Is on Fire),” from their second studio album Shangri-La, shared right here on this blog. Their history dates back far before then–starting as founder Jona Bechtolt’s solo project and picking up frontwoman Claire Evans in 2008. The last time I saw them live was in 2014 at the (in)famous Hudson Project Festival, which the band joked with me about.

[new] YACHT – Dystopia (The Earth Is On Fire)

By Will Oliver, March 26th 2011 — with 3 comments

Yacht have a new album titled Shangri-La coming out this year. They’ve given away album track “Dystopia (The Earth Is On Fire)” for free. It’s a disco themed dance that is straight up funky fun.

The band said they wrote the song after reading “post-apocalyptic science fiction”, and after listening to the song, they’re definitely telling the truth.

Here’s what YACHT had to say about the single:

“Dystopia (The Earth is on Fire) is our post-apocalyptic fight song, a cautionary tale, a science-fiction story for our particular eco-socio-political landscape. We face a crisis of Utopia. And yes, maybe we have traded our birthright as partners in the world’s living mind for the broken promises of history, and that’s led us nowhere. But as tempting as it is to give into a horror of our crumbling, radiation-leaking, bomb-launching reality, where the tracks lead is ultimately up to us.”

Shangri-La will be released June 21st via DFA Records. The label has started a new video series called The White Out Sessions, where the label films the test pressing of a 7″ single in their office. It’s pretty damn cool. Check that out along with the album’s tracklist & tour dates, all after the jump:

Yacht – Holiday (Weezer Cover)

By Will Oliver, February 9th 2010 — with 1 comment

Yacht covered Weezer’s very much classic Blue Album gem “Holiday” for their iTunes session EP. You can listen to it over at Yacht’s blog and purchase it on itunes if you like it enough.

It is certainly an interesting take of the more garage anthem Weezer made 16 years ago. To be honest, it doesn’t even sound like the song. If you had never heard the original, listen to that first, then check out the Yacht cover. Pretty different, right?

[new] Wolfmother – New Moon Rising & (YACHT Remix)N

By Will Oliver, September 13th 2009 — with 2 comments

Wolfmother keeps on surprising me. I lost all hope in the band after 2/3 of the band walked out on frontman Andrew Stockdale. They now have 3 other new members, but are keeping the Wolfmother name going strong.

The first single from their new album Cosmic Egg is called “New Moon Rising”. To tell you the truth, Wolfmother sounds just as good as they did with the other two missing members. They have changed their sound up a little, but this is still very much Wolfmother.

I also found this really cool YACHT Remix of the song that makes the rocking track into a enjoyable dance track.

I’m interested to see how the rest of Cosmic Egg flares out!
