Yellow Ostrich have a new album called Cosmos that is coming out February 25 via Barsuk. Last night they played a private invite-only show at Pianos, put on by BrooklynVegan, that served as a warm-up for their upcoming tour.
The show was an opportunity for them to test out the new songs from the album. The band made the most of it, playing the new album from front to back. Read the rest of this entry »

Yellow Ostrich will return with their new album Cosmos on February 25 via Barsuk Records. The band (Alex Schaaf and Michael Tapper are now joined by ex-Voxtrot member Jared Van Fleet and Zach Rose) had been in the studio over the last year working on the album.
Right now you can stream the album’s first single “Shades”, a great moody, atmospheric, track that draws you in and doesn’t let go. Always puts a smile on my face to listen to how far Alex’s project has come.
Yellow Ostrich have returned with a beautiful new song titled “Ghost”. It centers around a r&b flavoring from front-man Alex Schaaf, who displays an impressive range. With the new exploration, they still are able to weave in parts of their indie rock sound. Hear a little bit of The Morning Benders/POP ETC at the start and Bon Iver at the end. Both good things if you’re like me.
“Ghost” is resonating very strongly with me right now. Distinct imagery and feelings of fading memories of someone who used to be everything to you and the harsh reality that they’re just a fleeting memory that you don’t even recognize – or care enough to try to.
Absolutely in love with this. It’s off an EP of the same title that Barsuk will release on October 23.

We already heard “Marathon Runner” from Yellow Ostrich’s upcoming album Strange Land. We now also have “The Shakedown”, a guitar heavy track that further expands the new full band sound that Yellow Ostrich has comfortably transformed into. It’s a welcome change that sounds miles ahead of the bedroom sound that once defined the band.
Rolling Stone premiered the track, and you can download it yourself below.

“Marathon Runner” is the first preview of Yellow Ostrich’s new album Strange Land. It really shows how great that they sound as a trio, fully capitalizing on the bedroom sound that Alex had been developing for so many years. It’s a great song, and probably one of the many we can expect from the album.
While debut album The Mistress was more of a solo project of Alex Schaaf’s, Strange Land is a full band effort effort with multi-instrumentalist Jon Natchez and drummer Michael Tapper. Most of the songs were recorded in 6 days in a studio just outside of Woodstock, New York.
I’ve been a big fan of Yellow Ostrich, and it’s been fun watching the band evolve so much. I remember when Alex first emailed me when he was with The Chairs. It’s been a great ride, and I’m sure Strange Land will take things one step further.
HP & Spin are following three of my favorite young bands on the road as they hit the road towards SXSW. The three bands that they’re following are Rural Alberta Advantage, Yellow Ostrich, and Young the Giant. Cameras will follow the band as they travel to SXSW, capturing every step on their journey. So far they’ve posted the Yellow Ostrich and Young The Giant videos.
I’ve had the pleasure to see both live, and they’re fantastic. They’ve both been on the rise this year, and I couldn’t be happier than HP/Spin is following their journey.
