J Mascis – Wide Awake (Feat. Cat Power)

By Will Oliver, September 3rd 2014

J Mascis - Tied To A Star

Last week Dinosaur Jr. frontman J Mascis released his new album Tied To A Star via Sub Pop. One of the album highlights is “Wide Awake,” a love-sick duet with Chan Marshall, a.k.a. Cat Power.

It features a sensitive sounding Mascis who sings over a gently finger picked acoustic guitar. Marshall’s vocals come in and the two delight in an entrancing fashion showing all kinds of emotional vulnerability. I never would have seen this collaboration coming, but I’m very glad that it exists.

Cat Power and Coldplay – Wish I Was Here

By Will Oliver, July 19th 2014

Wish I Was Here Soundtrack

Just like he did on Garden State, Zach Braff has assembled quite a soundtrack for his new film Wish I Was Here. The film opened in limited cities yesterday, and will see a bigger release next week.

We already heard the new songs that both The Shins and Bon Iver did for the film. But Braff himself said his favorite part of the soundtrack is a collaboration between Coldplay and Cat Power that the artists made after seeing the film. This song is very much Chan Marshall’s show, as she takes a firm hold over the vocals, over a gentle and subdued Coldplay who sound more like their older selves on the song. Martin does come in to help out with some backing vocals towards the end, giving the song the perfect closure.

This wouldn’t be a collaboration that anyone really saw coming, which makes it that much better. NPR premiered the song, and spoke to Braff, who described in detail how exactly the song came to be:

Chris had the idea that it would be sung by a woman. I thought that was a genius idea, because one of the things the film is about is a strong woman (Kate Hudson’s character) becoming the matriarch of her family. When Chris and I were talking, we both kind of simultaneously said, ‘Cat Power.’ I reached out to Chan Marshall (aka Cat Power) and she and I met and really clicked. I set her up to watch the film in her apartment. The whole time she was watching she kept texting me all the different parts she was loving. She said yes the instant it was over. Chan Marshall went to Electric Lady studios in NYC and tracked her voice. Chris Martin would later add his harmonies with Coldplay producing the song.

Cat-Power

I got a pair of tickets to see the legendary Cat Power in a rather intimate setting at Music Hall of Williamsburg. This is the early show next Monday with things kicking off at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are still available to buy here.

This is a solo show from Cat Power, and one that you won’t want to miss. You rarely get a chance to catch her in such a tiny place. Guess what? We got a pair of tickets to give away to one of you lucky readers.

To enter the contest, simply follow us on twitter and tweet us your favorite Cat Power song. I’ll pick a winner at random and notify them directly on twitter. Sound good? Get to it, and good luck!

Willis_Earl_Beal

Willis Earl Beal releases his new album Nobody knows. via HXC/XL Recordings on September 10. He previously shared a track called “Everything Unwinds” and now he’s shared a track called “Coming Through” that features none other than Cat Power.

It’s a wonderful little duet that is funky and upbeat, leaving Beal’s old-timey vocals to shine through its deep groovy bassline. It’s a winner.

[new]: Cat Power – Fire

By Will Oliver, September 6th 2012

“Fire” is the heart-wrenching bonus track from Cat Power’s excellent new album, Sun that fans got on iTunes. Would I be wrong if I said this may be better than anything on Sun? It’s beautiful.

[new]: Cat Power – Cherokee

By Will Oliver, June 26th 2012 — with 2 comments

Last week Cat Power released “Ruin” her first new single in a long time, taken from her upcoming album, Sun. Today NPR made the albums opening track “Cherokee” available to listen.

Painful lyrics of heartbreak hang on the walls of “Cherokee”, which still manages to maintain an upbeat tempo throughout. Head over to NPR, hit “Hear The Discussion” and head to the 17:00 minute mark to hear the song.

Sun comes out September 4 via Matador
