The Mattson 2 at Music Hall of Williamsburg (April 13, 2018)

By Anthony Bauer, May 14th 2018 — with 1 comment

The Mattson 2 have been unstoppable this past year touring in support of one of 2017’s finest albums, Star Stuff (the collaborative album with Chaz Bundick, aka Chaz Bear, aka Toro y Moi). We we there for their Bowery Ballroom, LPR and Baby’s All Right show, so when we found out they were coming back to New York City, we knew where we were going to be on April 13th. The twin brother duo was opening the night up for Khruangbin, the 3-piece Thai-funk infused band that hails from Texas.

The Mattson 2 at Baby’s All Right (November 20, 207)

By Anthony Bauer, December 21st 2017

We’ve been seeing a lot of The Mattson 2 recently, and its something I’ve been very excited about. I’ve been a fan of theirs for years now, and its about time they start to get some more recognition. Earlier this year they released the collaborative and highly underrated album with Chaz Bear (aka Toro y Moi) titled Star Stuff (via Company Records) and have been out on the road in support of it ever since its release.

Preview: The Mattson 2 at Baby’s All Right

By Anthony Bauer, November 13th 2017

The Mattson 2 have been out on the road all year in support of their fantastic collaborative release Star Stuff with Chaz Bear (aka Toro y Moi) and haven’t shown signs of slowing down.  We were there this past August when the identical twin duo rolled through NYC to play a stellar set at LPR and are very excited they’ll be back later this month for not one, but two shows at Baby’s All Right!

The first set kicks off at 6pm with special opening set by James Tillman then a set from The Mattson 2, and the late set at kicks off at 9:30 with the premiere of the Mattson 2’s cover of Jon Coltrane’s A Love Supreme + a set of classic Mattson 2 originals.  Tickets are still available for both the early set and late set, so grab yours now before its too late!

PS – can’t make it to Baby’s All Right?  Don’t fret – the Mattson’s will be embarking on a small run of other East Coast dates this November kicking things off in Woodstock, NY at Colony on November 19th; The Mill Space in Wilmington, Delaware on November 21st; and then at Black Cat on November 22nd in Washington DC.

The Mattson 2 at LPR (August 25th, 2017)

By Anthony Bauer, November 2nd 2017 — with 2 comments

Earlier this year one of the best and maybe most underrated albums of 2017 was released, Star Stuff, a collaborative album (out now via Company Records) between Chaz Bear (formally Chaz Bundick, aka Toro y Moi) and The Mattson 2. The album saw Bear let loose and get jazzy while the Mattson’s get funky, and it truly was a perfect match for both artists. Fast forward a few months and The Mattson 2 made their return back to New York City (sans Chaz) for a small run of shows on the East Coast in support of Star Stuff including a stop at Le Poisson Rogue.

The identical twins Jared (on guitar) and Jonathan (on drums) create stunningly beautiful music rooted in jazz with trace elements of psych rock that creates one hell of a show. A good example of this was the opening song “Yeppers” which also happens to be off of another collaborative effort the Mattson’s have worked on, 2009’s Ray Barbee Meets the Mattson 2, where they teamed up with skateboarding legend Ray Barbee. “Yeppers” was the perfect way to kick off the night that was filled with both old and new tunes that spanned all of the Mattson’s discography.

Preview: The Mattson 2 at Le Poisson Rouge

By Anthony Bauer, August 23rd 2017

Fresh off their release of Star Stuff collaboration record with Chaz Bundick (aka Toro Y Moi), and even more recently their power tour trio with Chaz that we caught back in April, The Mattson 2 are back and have lined up a small run of East coast dates.

The identical twin guitar and drums duo rooted in jazz laced with elements of psych rock will be at Songbyrd in Washington, DC tonight; the beautiful House Industries Showroom in Yorklyn, Delaware on August 24th; and finally right back here in New York City at Le Poisson Rouge this Friday, August 25th.  Their tour doesn’t stop there though, as they head from NYC right to upstate New York the following day for the Huichica East Festival where they will support Real Estate as well as Charles Bradley.

Chaz Bundick Meets The Mattson 2 at Bowery Ballroom (April 16, 2017)

By Anthony Bauer, April 18th 2017 — with 1 comment

On an absolutely gorgeous Easter Sunday night, California’s own Chaz Bundick and The Mattson 2 rolled through New York City for a sold out show at the one and only Bowery Ballroom. The band is touring in support of their absolutely stellar new collaborative album, Star Stuff which came out in late March via Company Records. Along for the ride and kicking things off for the night was fellow Company Records label mate and fellow Californian, Madeline Kenney.

Khruangbin at Music Hall of Williamsburg (April 13, 2018)

By Will Oliver, May 14th 2018 — with 1 comment

Houston-based trio Khruangbin creates atmospheric Thai funk/surf-soul that is very much in a world of its own. In February they returned with new album Con Todo El Mundo, released via Dead Oceans.

Their tour in support of the great new record brought them to Brooklyn for not one but two sold out shows at Music Hall of Williamsburg. I caught night one of the two-night run on April 13, which featured a remarkable opening performance by jazz-inspired duo The Mattson 2 (find Bauer’s photos from their set here). They were a rather perfect compliment to the sounds of Khruangbin, spiritual cousins if you will.

Best Albums of 2017: Anthony’s Picks

By Anthony Bauer, January 12th 2018 — with 1 comment

Before we dive into my favorite albums of 2017, lets quickly visit some of the years best EP’s.  There were a lot of really fantastic EP’s released this year but that doesn’t mean any of these skimped out on quality.  Here are my favorite, or most listened to EP’s of 2017:

Best Songs of 2017: Anthony’s Picks

By Anthony Bauer, January 11th 2018

This ‘top 100 songs of 2017’ post could have easily been ‘top 200 songs of 2017’ due to the insane (yet absolutely amazing) amount of great music that was released this past year.  While it is near impossible to listen to it all, here were my favorite 100 songs from 2017 (with a bonus 5, because… why not?):

Favorite Concert Photos of 2017

By Will Oliver, January 3rd 2018

Yeah Yeah Yeahs at Kings Theatre (November 7)

If nothing else, we covered more shows in 2017 than ever before. In addition to my usual show-going madness, we had a great number of contributions from our amazing team of photographer friends here on the site both old and new. From the major festivals to the arena show, to the tiniest DIY club, we tried to be everywhere and anywhere that good music flowed.

Below are just a handful of some of the shots that our cameras snapped in 2017, listed in chronological order, along with the link to the show coverage and the appropriate credit. Thanks to everyone on the small but growing We All Want Someone team for their contributions and for you the readers for giving us the motivation to keep fighting the good fight.

Without further ado, here are some of our favorite live shots from 2017 (we will have a list ranking our top shows coming later today as well)
