Premiere: Bang Gang – Sabazios O (TRPTYCH Remix)

By Will Oliver, August 3rd 2016

Bang Gang - Sabazios O (TRPTYCH Remix)

Icelandic producer Bardi Johannsson who works under the moniker Bang Gang, creates chilly mesmerizing electronic music with an atmosphere. He’s no stranger to these parts.

Last year they released the rather underrated album The Wolves Are Whispering, which included the emotive track “Sabazios O,”, which featured a Sigur Ros-like emotional grip with a ton of power.

Today I have the honor of premiering a special remix of the track from an Icelandic duo named TRPTYCH. The techno group offered their long-time expertise on the dance/techno scene to offer of an analogue dance take on the song that strips it of its elements, creating something new while also maintaining the spirit of the original.

When asked about the remix, Bardi was taken by how his vocals “sound like I just ate a computer or maybe got eaten by a computer on a nice bass and beat.” Who knows, maybe the great Nicolas Winding Refn may use this in his next picture as Ryan Gosling is hitting the road, or another human.

Bang Gang – ‘The Wolves Are Whispering’

By Will Oliver, June 26th 2015

Bang Gang

This week Bardi Johannsson has returned with a brand new album under his Bang Gang moniker, an atmospheric electronic wonder titled The Wolves Are Whispering. While many other albums have been overhyped this summer, not many pack as many instant hooks and delights as Johannsoon does on his new LP. It may be an album better suited for late night listening during a cold winter night, but it’s magic is still plenty welcome in the summer.

[music video]: Bang Gang – “Out Of Horizon”

By Will Oliver, April 13th 2015

Bang Gang

Bang Gang is the project of Icelandic musician Bardi Johannsson, who you may know as one half of the electro-pop duo Starwalker (along with Jean-Benoît Dunckel of Air). On June 9 he’ll release his new album The Wolves Are Whispering, his first in seven years.

He’s already shared the chilly first single “Out Of Horizon,” and last Friday he released its official music video, a haunting visual journey which was wonderfully directed by Luis Vanegas.

Enjoy the video below.

Bang Gang

After spending some time making music with Starwalker along with Jean-Benoît Dunckel of Air, Icelandic musician Bardi Johannsson is returned with new music plans for his main project, Bang Gang.

He’ll release their new album this spring, and based on the album’s first single “Out Of Horizon,” it’s looking good. It’s an icy track, full of chilly moments of pop bliss, perfect for this winter daze we seem eternally stuck in.

Stream it below and keep an eye out for more news on the upcoming album.

Bang Gang – World Is Gray

By Will Oliver, May 20th 2009

What is it about Iceland that allows their natives to make such beautiful music? It seems like every artist that comes from Iceland makes some of the nicest music around today. Bang Gang is another artist who has proved this true. It is the project of Barði Jóhannsson.

Although I have just discovered Bang Gang, they are no rookies. Bang Gang has been around since 1998, with three albums released over that span. He hasn’t yet gotten the attention he deserves over here, but lets hope that in time people will come around to him.

I want to share with you a track of his latest album. The song is called “World Is Gray”, and it is a wounderful piece showcasing Barði’s stunning vocals, and ability to craft a song.

Guest Blogger: Cassette Culture

By Will Oliver, November 6th 2008

Tom from the wonderful blog Cassette Culture was kind enough to take some time to write a guest post for us here at WAWSTSF. He even allowed me to return the favor. Here is his post, one quite dedicated to van she technologic. Dive in and enjoy!!

Van She Technologic: Remixes of the Finest Quality

All Van She seem to be doing these days is sit in a butter factory somewhere churning out remixes. There’s tons of the stuff and crucially, the quality ain’t slipping. A Van She Tech remix is perhaps defined by how different it is from the original. Too many remixers these days arn’t really doing enough to the tracks loitering on their PCs. You get the feeling Van She have a proper good pop at it. Within the tracks themselves they keep things dynamic, mashing up the pace so you’re never bored. On top of this, I’d say about half of the Van She Tech mixes I’ve heard have come from an artist previously unknown to me. Its refreshing to hear – I’m getting a bit fed up of ‘Kids’ remixes to be honest. So here they are, in my opinion, four of the best:

[MP3] : Lost Valentinos – CCTV (Bang Gang vs. Van She Tech remix)
[MP3] : New Young Pony Club – Ice Cream (Van She Tech remix)
[MP3] : Sneaky Sound System – UFO (Van She Tech remix)
[MP3] : Teenager – Alone Again (Van She Tech remix)

Hot Chip At Terminal 5, April 24th

By Will Oliver, April 24th 2010 — with 4 comments

Last night I got my first pretty big press pass for a show. I have gotten some invites to free shows through my blog, but last night was the first “big” one. EMI hooked me up with a photo pass for Hot Chips show at Terminal 5 last night. The photo pass allowed me to take photos right near the stage for the first three songs. It was a surreal experience. No matter how I look at this blog, it is nuts that it has become something that allows me to take photos alongside photographers who are working for legit publications.

I came a little late for Gang Gang Dance but I saw enough of their set to get a good idea about how they sounded that night. I saw them open for Battles at a free summerstage show back in 2008, and was rather bored. However, this time they had a full band and sounded a lot better. They are supposed to release a new album this year. If any of the songs they played are on that new one, it should be good.

Hot Chip came out starting with a bang with a strong three song opener of “Hand Me Down Your Love, One Pure Thought, and Thieves In The Night. They slowed things down with “Brothers” before erupting with “One Life Stand” and “Over and Over”, both of which got the crowd dancing and singing-along.

This was my 2nd time this year seeing Hot Chip, and it was just as fun as before. Each band member is full of energy dancing along to the music, having fun. The set closed with an amazing run of Boy From School, Take It In, We Have Love, and Hold On. The crowd was having a blast singing and dancing, without a care.

Hot Chip came out with a fun encore that started with their cover of Shakira’s “She Wolf”, which brought smiles from all the women in the crowd. They ran through a epic run of “I Feel Better” before finishing with the always timely “Ready For The Floor”. Everyone in the crowd completely lost it, letting loose on the floor.

The crowd was full of fans young and old. Drunk and high…maybe even rolling. The point was, everyone was there to have fun, singing and dancing their hearts out. I’d go see Hot Chip any day of the week.

Here is the set (I think it is right?):

Hand Me Down Your Love
One Pure Thought
Thieves in the Night
Brothers
One Life Stand
Over and Over
Alley Cats
And I Was a Boy From School
Take It In
We Have Love
Hold On
Encore:
She Wolf – Shakira Cover
I Feel Better
No Fit State
Ready for the Floor

Here are the photos I took last night. I am really proud with how well they came out:
