Beck at Hammerstein Ballroom (June 30, 2014)

By Will Oliver, July 1st 2014

Last night saw Beck take over Hammerstein Ballroom, the first of his back-to-back New York shows, with tonight’s show going on right now over at Central Park.

Things kicked off with an opening set from The Ghost Of A Saber Tooth Tiger, the band led by Sean Lennon (John’s son). I saw them open up for The Flaming Lips last year, but they sounded even better this time around. Heavy on the psych elements, with plenty of vocals moments that served as reminders that this is indeed John’s son.

Beck started things off with an acoustic set composed of songs from the recently released Morning Phase, along with songs off Sea Change, its companion album of sorts. It made sense that Beck’s live band consisted of the band that made both of those albums with him (Jason Falkner, Smokey Hormel, Joey Waronker, Justin Meldal-Johnsen and Roger Joseph Manning Jr). They were also joined by Gus Seyffert.

Beck SNL

Over the weekend Beck stopped by SNL to play “Blue Moon” & “Wave” both off his new album Morning Phase.

In a cool turn of events, Father John Misty joined him for both performances. A full string section joined them on their performance of “Wave” as well.

Find both performances posted below.

[new]: Beck – Waking Light

By Will Oliver, February 11th 2014

Beck - Morning Phase

Beck’s new album Morning Phase comes out later this month (February 25 via Capitol Records). He previously shared the first single “Blue Moon” and now he’s fired back at us with a lovely cut titled “Waking Light.”

The Sea Change comparisons are inevitable, but I’m actually hearing a great deal of Pink Floyd in “Waking Light.” It’s a majestic listen that is quite breathtaking. It’s awesome.

Take a listen to it below.

[new]: Beck – Blue Moon

By Will Oliver, January 20th 2014

Beck - Morning PhaseOver the weekend Beck shared a teaser for his new album Morning Phase. It included a brief snippet of the album’s first single, “Blue Moon.” Today Beck has shared the new single with us in full.

Reports of it being reminiscent to the feel of his classic album Sea Change are fairly accurate. There’s a light acoustic guitar and dreamy feel that would have been right at home on the album. Beck also makes good use of electronic blips that add to the lovely atmosphere that the song dabbles with. Lets not forgot some typically strong vocal work.

It’s a great track, and a great sign for the rest of what’s to come with Morning Phase. I’m very excited.

Enjoy “Blue Moon” below. Read the rest of this entry »

Beck - Morning Phase

Beck’s new album Morning Phase comes out February 25 via Capitol Records. That’s the album art above.

We’ve yet to hear any recorded music from the new album yet, but today he’s shared a trailer for the album that features a clip of a song from the album titled “Blue Moon.”

It definitely has a Sea Change feel with a heavily present acoustic guitar, but there is also great use of electronics to give it a really pretty sound.

Take a listen to the new track and enjoy the video which shows the new record getting pressed. The video is posted below.

The other night Beck performed in Los Angeles, where celebrities performed songs from Song Reader, his sheet music album. During the show Beck himself performed a new track from his upcoming album Morning Phase.

The song he played is called “Wave,” and it was played with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. It’s a lovely, haunted, song with strong vocal work from Beck.

Beck Announces New Album: Morning Phase

Beck has announced that he will release a new album titled Morning Phase in February 2014. He will release it on Capitol Records, who he just signed with.

The album is described as a companion piece of sorts to Beck’s 2002 album Sea Change, featuring many of the same musicians (Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Joey Waronker, Smokey Hormel, Roger Joseph Manning Jr., and Jason Falkner) who helped Beck make that record. They also play with him live now.

Morning Phase will follow the three great singles that Beck released this year: “It Won’t Be Long”, “Defriended” and “Gimme.”

Beck-I-Wont-Be-Long-608x608

Beck’s new standalone single “I Won’t Be Long” is tremendous stuff. It’s one of my favorite songs of the year, so far. That’s actually a shortened edit version of the track, which gets extended to 15-minutes on the single’s vinyl release.

At 15-minutes long it takes more time to get started, playing around with various electronics and sounds, giving the song a much larger than life feel. Lots of freakout type stuff, before the part of the edit we’re familiar with finally kicks in. The real kicker, around the 9:30 mark, (now former) Sonic Youth member Kim Gordon comes in to add a spoken word piece to the track.

Listen to the extended version over at 1077 The End.
