Among the albums released in 2017, The Navigator by Hurray for the Riff Raff (released via ATO Records) and Out of the Storm by Waxahatchee (released via Merge Records) were two of my personal favorites. Much to my delight, the two acts embarked on a co-headlining tour this past April which found them playing the New York area twice. I caught the first of the two shows, which took place at Warsaw in Greenpoint on April 13th. Accompanying Waxahatchee and Hurray for the Riff Raff as the opening act was Spacebomb Records recording artist Bedouine.

With the release of Hurray For The Riff Raff’s sixth album The Navigator (released in March via ATO Records), the band’s Alynda Segarra has expanded the folk rock sound found on their earlier releases into something more. Part concept album, part political, and very much still a folk album that you’d come to expect from the talented Segarra, just with a lot more influences and a natural evolution of an artist with something to say.

Recap: Newport Folk Festival – Day 1

It only takes one visit to fall in love with Newport Folk Festival. What once felt like an unknown curiosity encounter to me has blossomed into an annual ritual that will occur every July, simply because it’s one of the best music festivals that American has to offer.

What makes Newport so special is the chill and very welcoming atmosphere that wears off on everyone from the crowd to the performers themselves. Everyone feels like one big happy family, which makes it a true standout amongst the more corporate festivals out there.
