Band To Watch

[Introducing]: Young Maverick

By Will, November 2nd 2011 — with 1 comment

Young Maverick has from down under in Melbourne, Australia. A friend of the band tipped them to me, and I’m really happy that he did. One listen to their clean cut single, “Reception Deception”, was enough to seal the deal.

Effortless fun guitar rock that is pure pleasure on the ears. That’s what music should be, and that is exactly what these guys deliver. So much so, that I was instantly reminded of the younger days of Phoenix. You know, that band from France that you may have heard of.

There’s nothing quite like a feel good rock song. If these guys stay on point, I think these guys are in for quite a ride.

Download a mp3 of “Reception Deception” below, and be sure to check out their facebook page for streams of two other songs:

[Band To Watch]: Friends

By Will, October 31st 2011

Brooklyn-based band Friends have caught my attention with their new single “I’m His Girl”. It’s a bit of indie funk, with an attitude. Friends give you that and more on the single which is infectious to the bone. It’s the type of music that won’t leave your head. Next thing you know, everyone will be asking you what exactly your bumping, and you can proudly tell them it’s Friends. This band just gives off this feeling of “cool” that makes it easy to see why they are so likeable.

The “I’m His Girl” 7″ single is released tomorrow, but you can stream it below (Stream b-side “My Boo” over at the bands site:

[Band To Watch]: Coastal Cities

By Will, October 31st 2011

Coastal Cities are a group of friends from High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. At only 17 years old, these young lads have put together an EP called Think Tank that is going to get you moving. Think a mix of Two Door Cinema Club and Foals. Jangly guitars hit hard with dance aspirations create a highly enjoyable sound.

The title track, which rightfully leads off the EP is one to rave about for sure. Wide-winged guitars ride the boundaries of dancerock all while sounding big and awe inspiring. It’s feel good music in it’s finest form, and I can’t get enough. These guys are young, but already have a solid foundation that surely makes them a band to keep an eager eye on.

Below listen to a stream of “Think Tank”:

You Won’t – Who Knew

By Will, October 30th 2011

Less is more lately. This is a lesson I stand by in general, and often when it comes to my music. In a culture that is so obsessed with such busy sounding music, You Won’t are a band that do what comes natural to them, and are all the better for it. Josh Arnoudse and Raky Sastri compose of the Boston duo, and they are two names you should get to know.

“Who Knew” is perfect example of their stylings. Romantic delivery of light folk pop seem to come so easy for these two. “Who Knew” is smart, clean, and as feel good as they come. Sweet and sincere, I don’t see where you’d have a problem with listening to these guys.

It’s from their album, Skeptic Goodbye, available to purchase here.

League – How Do I Know [EP]

By Will, October 27th 2011 — with 1 comment

League are a band whose members come from both L.A. and London. Here’s how they describe themselves:

We are LEAGUE, a journalism and architecture students that dropped out of college to live in a tent, on the beach, a primal experience that was a huge influence, that we managed to mix with a modern/urban sonority, to make a connection between two distinct worlds.

Our music tackles social and emotional issues within a psychedelic, naturalist and ethnic/tribal context.

They recently released their new EP, How Do I Know. You can check it out right now at their bandcamp page.

The title track is a big bombastic track with with a lo-fi quality that longs for a big epic reach. It’s a good one. The other two songs included on the EP, “Your World” & “The Shore” are equal in quality.

These guys should’ve released this EP during the summer, because these songs would sound magnificent during the freedom that the warm summer air brings. All 3 tracks deserve your attention because they are catchy, feel good, and memorable. Not a bad trio.

Introducing: The Eversons

By Will, October 18th 2011

The Eversons are guitar rock band hailing from New Zealand that sound like a beautiful hybrid of Art Brut and Pavement. Guitars not shy on the hooks, and vocals that instantly called to mind Eddie Argos. In other words, indie guitar rock at it’s best.

“Hyacinth Girl” is a song taken from their debut self titled EP, and what a catchy little tune it is. Although it sounding pretty nice during my first listen int didn’t hit me until much later. Laden hooks and hidden agendas come racing through the seems and the next thing you know you’re humming along incredibly impressed.

I’m convinced that these guys got a bright future ahead of themselves. This is as polished of a debut as you can hope for. Call me a believer.

Their self titled debut EP is available to download for free via Lil’ Chief Records. Stream it after the jump, but first check out the video for the awesome “Hyacinth Girl”, or stream a mp3:

[Introducing]: The Doozies

By Will, September 14th 2011 — with 3 comments

The Doozies are brothers Henry and Dave Van Dusen. They make some pretty amazing garage rock out of Washington, DC. I was tipped off to them by my friend Jimmy and have really been enjoying their self titled album. It’s available to stream over at bandcamp and it’s available to buy at a name your own price value.

It’s a collection of 17 songs full of sweat, heart, and fuzz. What sounds bad about that? Nothing. Listen to it below and support them over at bandcamp.

[Introducing]: The Van Goghs

By Will, August 22nd 2011 — with 2 comments

I still remember listening to Arctic Monkeys demos and having that giddy feeling that I discovered something really special. Who knows if The Van Goghs will be the next Arctic Monkeys, but that doesn’t matter. What does is that they are a great young talent that deserves your attention.

The band hails from York, Pennsylvania and deliver the exciting rock goods. For a young band they sound self assured and confident, which reminded me a lot of some band from Sheffield. Three songs are available at their soundcloud page, and they are enough to validate this band as one to watch.

“Let Go Ego” sounds like a rough demo of an Arctic Monkeys track fronted by Miles Kane (already a good thing). “Space Elevator” has a youthful aesthetic that is impossible to ignore. You wouldn’t be wrong to mistake the band for young British rockers after one listen to the catchy little number, “Falling From Bombay”.

The Watercourse Sessions may or may not be the name of an upcoming ep or lp. It’s what shows up as the album tag for “Space Elevator”. No matter what it ends up being called, I’m already excited for it.

Grab these songs below and find out why The Van Goghs are ones to get excited for:

New York City Cops – Summer Sun

By Will, August 20th 2011 — with 1 comment

“Summer Sun” is a really solid demo from a young English act called New York City Cops. I’m taking a wild guess that these guys are fans of The Strokes. They hit the nail on the head with that sound on “Summer Sun” a feel good track that could have easily been recorded in your garage.

Nothing gets lost on the way though. Similar to those NYC rockers, there’s just something instant about their sound. The recording may be rough around the edges, but I have a feeling they don’t mind it that way.

An update on their facebook page tells us that they are planning to finish a 5-track EP for a (hopeful) October release date.

Satellite Stories – Family

By Will, June 27th 2011

If you know me well, you know that I love me some carefree, catchy, guitar pop. A good hook, a memorable chorus, and a tight bass riff will win me over more often than not. I love bands like Two Door Cinema Club not for innovation, but for the joyful dance grooves and general happiness that their songs bring. If you agree with that sentiment, then I think Finland’s Satellite Stories are going to be your best friends.

They just released new single “Family”, and it embraces all the things that I’ve mentioned. They don’t hold back at all on the track, making it another essential song on my summer playlist. Hooks and pop tricks are packed into every corner and pocket of “Family”, resulting in one hell of a single.

If this is your introduction to the band, you need to hear the rest of their young, but highly enjoyable arsenal. These songs aren’t leaving your heads anytime soon. Deal.
