The Bonnaroo 2013 lineup is here. Headlining are Paul McCartney, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Björk, Mumford & Sons, and Wilco. You also get, The National, R. Kelly, the Wu-Tang Clan, and Pretty Lights.

Other acts of interest for me are Passion Pit, David Byrne & St. Vincent, Billy Idol, The xx, Kendrick Lamar, Grizzly Bear, Animal collective, Of Monsters and Men, Jim James, Nas, Beach House, ZZ Top, Cat Power, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes, A$AP Rocky, Tame Impala, Gaslight Anthem, Portugal. The Man, Foals, Local Natives, Dirty Projectors, Matt & Kim, Amadou & Mariam, Alt-J, Father John Misty, The Tallest Man On Earth, Earl Sweatshirt, The Vaccines, Holy Ghost!, Divine Fits, Purity Ring, Cults, Four Tet, Calexico, Japandroids, Wild Nothing, Django Django, Haim, Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, DIIV, Reptar,

Jim James will head the Superjam this year, with Ed Helms (from The Office/The Hangover) headlining the Bluegrass Superjam.

Pretty solid lineup. I may have to make it out just to catch Sir Paul already. Tickets go on sale this Saturday at noon.

The Shins @ Bonnaroo (June 10, 2012)

By Will Oliver, June 14th 2012

I had been trying to see The Shins for years. I was seemingly always at the wrong place when they toured. Finally the stars aligned, and I found myself watching their set at Bonnaroo. Now, unfortunately, I’ll never get to see The Shins with the original lineup. That was something I was somewhat worried about beforehand. Now looking back on it, that was silly.

The new band had been chosen for good reason. They can play. No disrespect to the original crew, but these guys filled in just fine. The songs were a lot more beefed up and livelier than I would have imagined. James stuck to mostly older stuff, opening the show with “Kissing The Lipless” and “Caring Is Creepy” instantly sending me into a glorious nostalgic trip. While singing along with the lyrics, I was literally being hit with memories of who I was with and where I was when I first listened to the songs. That is a rare occurrence, and that just shows how much this band means to some people.

I left the show, and the festival feeling really good after The Shins set, one of the most enjoyable of the whole weekend.

Ben Folds Five @ Bonnaroo (June 10, 2012)

By Will Oliver, June 14th 2012

Ben Folds will always have a space in my heart. His music was a big part of my teenage years. So to be finally able to say I saw Ben Folds Five live is a special thing. The band played a show a week before their Bonnaroo performance, but before that, they hadn’t played a show together in 13 years. That’s a long time.

They didn’t lose anything on the way. They weren’t too dramatic about it, just went along their business rocking out all of the classic jams that graced the ears of many a generation in the 90s. Ben Folds is always a pleasure to watch live, and the rest of the band seemed just as happy to be playing again.

Many great things to praise about these guys being back. But honestly, just being able to hear songs like “Brick”, “Army”, “Narcolepsy” was enough to put a smile on my face, sending me down a memory lane of sorts.

They got a new album on the way, so hopefully the good vibes keep on coming from BF5.

Grouplove @ Bonnaroo (June 10, 2012)

By Will Oliver, June 14th 2012 — with 1 comment

Grouplove’s set was for the most part very bright and energetic. The crowd was into it singing along with the bands catchier numbers like “Tounge Tied” and “Colours”. There were some parts in the middle which didn’t do much for me, but overall it was a pretty enjoyable set. The crowd was singing and going wild during most of the set, which says something about them.

Delta Spirit @ Bonnaroo (June 10, 2012)

By Will Oliver, June 13th 2012

Coming into the festival, I knew I wanted to at least catch Delta Spirit play “Bushwick Blues”, one of my favorite songs of 2010. I was able to catch that mesmerizing performance along with many others. They seem to be one of those bands that have a really strong core following of fans that are extremely passionate about them. After seeing them at Bonnaroo I know why. These guys give it all live, and want you to join them. They bring a extreme sense of emotional sincerity that is felt throughout their performance.

Red Hot Chili Peppers @ Bonnaroo (June 9, 2012)

By Will Oliver, June 13th 2012 — with 2 comments

Red Hot Chili Peppers performance at Bonnaroo this weekend completely erased the fact that their latest album wasn’t very memorable. For the most part the band went back to their roots, delivering electric versions of their classics that seem to have never gone away. Their playing was so tight that I even was able to finally connect with the stuff off of I’m With You.

I am a big fan of what John Frusciante brought to the group, so I was initially worried about how new guitarist Josh Klinghoffer would impact their live presence. No worries there, the dude can absolutely shred. I did miss Frusciante’s vocals, which were something I always found to be a understated bright spot of the band.

The band is still in incredible shape both physically and musically. For older fellas, they still bring the rock intensity like it’s no ones business. The Chili Peppers have still got it. Not like I was ever worried. And “Under The Bridge” still remains one of the most incredible things to hear live. The crowd singing along just takes you far, far, away.

The Roots @ Bonnaroo (June 9, 2012)

By Will Oliver, June 13th 2012

The Roots kicked off their set in proper fashion, cover The Beastie Boys “Paul Revere” as a tribute to MCA. I knew the show was going to be great from that point on. The band has a reputation as a top tier live act, and they lived up to it. It was soulful set that blended all genres into one great big ball. It was a pleasure to see ?uestlove hard at work, he truly is a one of a kind drummer behind that kit.

Musicaly, The Roots put on one of the best shows of Bonnaroo. They were ultra smooth, and a lot of fun, with plenty of covers and jams that any fan of music could appreciate.

Santigold @ Bonnaroo (June 9, 2012)

By Will Oliver, June 13th 2012

I wasn’t sure how Santigold would sound on the headlining stage. We all know she brings the rock, but I wasn’t sure how it would translate to the biggest stage at the festival. My (minor) worries were squashed quickly. Santigold’s energy and ability to bring fun onto a stage was immediately felt throughout the crowd. It peaked when she asked fans from the front of the crowd to join her on stage.

Santi knows how to make great fun live music because she knows how to have fun. She has greatly improved her live show from the last time I saw her (Central Park in 2008), and seems to be headed in the right direction in every which way.

Battles @ Bonnaroo (June 9, 2012)

By Will Oliver, June 13th 2012

I last saw Battles 4 summers ago at Central Park. That was when Tyondai Braxton was still with them. I was curious as to how the band would sound live without him, but was never really worried. At the core, the band is still the same, they just have no live vocals to work with. They just play the pre-recorded vocals and continue to bend mind with their experimental jams.

Only caught the last tier of their set, but it was a solid set that proved to me that the band is doing just fine as a trio.
