CMJ 2013

Nick Waterhouse, Jacco Gardner and Hookworms were the three acts I was able to catch at AAM’s day CMJ party over at Knitting Factory. It was the first time I got to catch all three acts, and all sounded great, especially Nick Waterhouse, who lived up to his reputation as an insanely good live act. Jacco Gardner provided some trippy rock goodness and Hookworms brought a monstrous loud rock energy.

[CMJ]: TORRES @ Baby’s All Right (October 19, 2013)

By Will Oliver, October 21st 2013

Although it seems like a lifetime ago now, I saw TORRES not too long ago during SXSW. She played a solo set, but it was easily one of the most powerful sets that I saw in Austin.

TORRES, also known as Mackenzie Scott, played at Baby’s All Right as a part of BrooklynVegan’s CMJ party, and sported a drummer this time around. I’m ashamed that I missed her performance, but Andrew St. Clair was there to make up for my incompetence, and he got some great shots that I’m excited and proud to share with you guys.

London duo, Public Service Broadcasting also performed at BrooklynVegan’s showcase over at Baby’s All Right on Saturday night. Andrew St. Clair got some great shots of their performance, which featured tracks from their debut album Inform – Educate – Entertain, which they released earlier this year.

Find a collection of photographs from their performance below.

I loved what I heard from Joanna Gruesome when they rocked Pianos. Whatever “it” is, they got “it.” Andrew St. Clair was also there that night and dug their performance so much that he caught them again on Saturday over at Baby’s All Right during BrooklynVegan’s CMJ party.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t there with him this time around, but from the looks of the photos, it looks like they played another great set. I can’t wait to see these guys again someday.

Find all of Andrew’s fantastic photos from the evening posted below.

[CMJ]: TOPS @ Arlene’s Grocery (October 18, 2013)

By Will Oliver, October 21st 2013

Last year, Montreal band TOPS released one of my favorite albums of the year with the dangerously good Tender Opposites.

I kept missing them at previous CMJ’s or the scattered NYC performance here and there. So I made it a mission this time around to catch one of their performances, and it ended up being post-Arcade Fire at Arlene’s Grocery as a part of the M For Montreal showcase. Read the rest of this entry »
