Diarrhea Planet – Spooners

By Will Oliver, September 4th 2014

Diarrhea Planet

Diarrhea Planet are one of the best rock and roll live shows you can see right now. Seriously, if you haven’t seen them live, you’re missing out. They’re loud, full of energy, and let it all hang out. See photos of their performance at Governors Ball this year right here.

This firey spirit lives on in “Spooners”, a new song that the band released as a part of the 2014 Adult Swim Singles Series. It’s a total guitar overload, with plenty of riffage and smart hooks that will melt your face. These guys just do rock music all kinds of right.

Download “Spooners” below.

Speedy Ortiz – Bigger Party

By Will Oliver, August 25th 2014

Speedy Ortiz - Bigger Party

Speedy Ortiz have built buzz the right way, slowly but surely picking up a little bit of steam

Last month they released a new song called “Bigger Party” as a free download as a part of the annual Adult Swim Singles Series. It’s a more polished take of the 90s slacker-rock sound that the band have made into their own, with a pretty clever and hilarious chorus.

S – Vampires

By Will Oliver, July 20th 2014

S

S, the long-time project of Jenn Ghetto (formerly of Carissa’s Wierd), has recently signed to Hardly Art, who will release her new album Cool Choices on September 23. The album was produced by Death Cab For Cutie’s Chris Walla at his Hall of Justice studios in Seattle, and features a live band for the first time on one of her albums.

Here’s what Ghetto had to say about the album in a press release that she herself penned:

At the start of 2012, in the middle of a break-up, I started writing this record. As with the others, the songs all started in my bedroom, but I convinced my metal drummer friend Zach McNulty to help me flesh them out (you guys, he uses a lot of restraint), along with my longtime friends Betsy Olson (bass) and Carrie Murphy (guitar) because I knew they were talented, I liked being around them, and they both had cars

Below, you can grab a free download of the album’s first single “Vampires.” It’s a light and airy track full of guitars that sound like they could have came off those early Barsuk released Death Cab for Cutie records.

Lower – Soft Options

Lower

Copenhagen band Lower will release their debut album Seek Warmer Climes on June 17 via Matador Records.

We previously heard “Lost Weight, Perfect Skin”, the album’s first single. It was a punkier affair than “Soft Options” the latest track to be shared from the album. It’s a quiet affair, that has some moments that remind of The Smiths, including some Morrissey-esque vocals at the beginning.

The band have made it available to download for free. Grab your copy or stream it, below.

Sharpless – Gemini

By Will Oliver, April 11th 2014

Sharpless

Chicago’s Sharpless have hit back with “Gemini” their first new track in some time.
The band’s Montana Levy takes over lead vocals on this way, giving way for its glossy pop-rock blitz to take over. It’s an exciting track, one that you can grab for free right now over at their bandcamp page.

Give it a try below as well.

Craft Spells - Nausea

It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Justin Vellesteros and his band Craft Spells. Even longer since their last full-length album. Well thankfully they have announced a new one. It’s called Nausea and it’s out June 10 via Captured Tracks.

Nausea was recorded in Seattle, recorded/engineered by Dylan Wall and produced by Vallesteros himself. Vallestteros experienced artistic and personal growth during his hiatus away from the band, discovering a new version of himself when compared to the one that released 2010’s Idle Labor. He trained himself properly on piano, as it’s instrument from which all the tracks for Nausea were written. So clearly this new album is a new direction for the band.

The first taste of the album is single “Breaking The Angle Against The Tide.” Craft Spells have treated us with a free mp3 download of the song, and what a gift it is. Those wicked guitar lines are still there, but this time they are guiding by sweeping strings that add a whole different layer to their sound. It’s sounding sort of like the direction Wild Nothing took mixed in with the earnest nature of The Drums.

It’s an impressive comeback song. Grab your free download below.

Swans - To Be Kind

Swans release new album To Be Kind on May 13 via Young God/Mute.

The band have shared the first cut of the album, “A Little God In My Hands”, making it available as a free download. It’s a 7-minute epic track that has a funky stomp to it that cuts in and out of various worlds, including psych-freakouts with horns blasting. It’s quite a journey.

Grab your mp3 download below.

Download U2’s “Invisible” For Free

By Will Oliver, February 3rd 2014

u2-invisible

Yesterday U2 premiered a minute long clip of there new song “Invisible” as a commercial during the Superbowl. They have partnered up with the charity (RED) and Bank of America to give the song away for free on iTunes for today only. For every download of the song on iTunes, Bank Of America will donate $1 to the fund which works to fight AIDs, tuberculosis and malaria.

“Invisible,” which was produced by Danger Mouse is quite alright. It has that typical grandiose uplifting feel, with Danger Mouse’s influence definitely felt. Some good slinky guitar work from The Edge. It’s good to hear the band back at work.

The song should appear on the band’s new album (expected for release this summer), but won’t be the first single.

Head to iTunes to grab your download of the track and find the SuperBowl commercial clip below.
