Governors Ball 2014 Best Photos and Recap

By Will Oliver, June 18th 2014

Governors Ball 2014 came and went, and it was a great one for the books. How could you not love it this year? The weekend was completely free of rain and you could actually walk without your feet sinking into a dark muddy abyss. It was perfect.

Musically, the lineup was great. From top to bottom, Governors showcased a balanced lineup that featured something for everyone. 2000s rock fans especially, as we saw great performances from The Strokes, Interpol, Spoon, and TV On The Radio. There were also classic sets from legends such as Jack White, Damon Albarn, and of course, Outkast.

It’s about time that New York City has a major music festival that fans can rely on, year in, and year out. They’ve proven that they know how to book their lineups and can be trusted to deliver a great 3-day weekend each year. It’s become a major player in the festival circuit, and looks to only get bigger over time. I can’t wait to see what the future brings for it.

Below, I’ve ranked the top 10 sets I saw at Governors Ball, in addition to a day by day link catch-up style recap where you can check out the individual posts and photos. I’ve also shared my favorite photos that I took from the weekend. Enjoy! Read the rest of this entry »

Interpol at Governors Ball 2014

By Will Oliver, June 17th 2014 — with 1 comment

The last time I saw Interpol was at Radio City, way back in March 2005. It’s hard to believe, I know, considering that they’re one of my favorite bands. Back as a teenager, they were one of the first bands I found an interest in outside of commercial rock opening a lot of news doors for me musically. That Radio City show was one of my first rock concert experiences, and I still remember it very vividly.

As it always does, life eventually got in the way, and I was always in the wrong place at the wrong time whenever they would come back to play. It’s hard to believe its been nearly a decade since that show. So, their set at Governors Ball was something I was looking forward to with rabid anticipation ever since the lineup was announced months ago. I’m glad to say that it lived up to all my expectations, and then some.

The Kills at Governors Ball 2014

By Will Oliver, June 17th 2014

The duo of Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince, who you know better as The Kills is always a treat live. The two of them can create quite a ruckus on stage, a garage rock assault on the ears. These days their backed up by two pairs of stand up drummers who keep their sticks held above their heads in an X formation when they’re not pounding away.

Tyler, The Creator at Governors Ball 2014

By Will Oliver, June 16th 2014

After catching Earl Sweatshirt, we all shifted across the field to see what I expected to be a rather chaotic set from Tyler, The Creator. The man was in full form, joking that he didn’t even realize that Governors Ball existed until he realized he had to play it. His commentary on the festival’s smell (which apparently smelt like “Dookie”) to all of us in the photo pit (“your photos suck”) was playful, funny, and very much Tyler, The Creator. Earl Sweatshirt at Governors Ball 2014

By Will Oliver, June 16th 2014

It was an Odd Future takeover at Governors Ball on Sunday as Earl Sweatshirt’s set was an hour before Tyler, The Creator’s set, occurring at the opposing stages right across the field from one another.

As expected, the set did feature a guest appearance form Tyler who performed his part on “Whoa.” Even with the Odd Future support, this was Earl’s set. It was hard to imagine that only a few years ago we were wondering when the guy would be back in the public eye. Here he was, playing to a packed crowd at Governors Ball, doing his own thing. The crowd was a bit calmer than I would have guessed, but then again Earl’s material can tend to be a bit more leaner than Tyler’s stuff. Even so, he still was able to find moments of opportunity to get the crowd fired up. Read the rest of this entry »

Banks at Governors Ball 2014

By Will Oliver, June 16th 2014 — with 3 comments

Hot rising L.A. pop-songstress Banks was able to pack in the Gotham Tent fully during her early day set at Governors, an impressive feat considering that she doesn’t release her debut album Goddess until later this fall. Even so, Banks has made her mark on the industry as a rising star through a series of impressive singles that have her well on her way.
